Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Route planning - Val Thorens to Lauterbrunnen

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Due to some fantastic planning (!) we are in Val Thorens for the start of our holiday, then heading to the Jungfrau for a few days, so have a bit of a drive between the two! Any guidance would be appreciated on the best route so I am not caught out! Traffic will hopefully not be a major issue as we will be leaving after a full day's skiing on Sunday.

My route planner is basically suggesting we head to Lauterbrunnen via Annecy, Geneva and Bern sticking to the main motorways etc. (I have a vignette for CH)

But I note there is a shorter route via Megeve, Chamonix, Martigny and Villeneuve. If anyone is familiar with these alternatives I would be grateful for your thoughts.

@Richie456, if you are ok with car sickness - Megeve route is fine, if not then beware!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks, it will also be somewhat dependant upon whether there is snow on Sunday!

I think it's quite a bit shorter@Richie456, through Chamonix etc, very interesting too but obviously in the dark for you ? Well established but with more gradient and turns, as described above, although not bad flow to it.

I'd always plump for the most interesting just for that reason, so bias there from me.

IF there were to be heavy snow, then the Chamonix pass over to CH may close. Other than that, no particular concerns.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've always done it via Chamonix in summer (in both directions), but that’s in a sports car with guaranteed dry conditions. Winter? I think I'd plan for the motorways and maybe choose the mountain route if conditions are ok on the day.

If that's using the Arly Gorge road between Megeve and Albertville it's notoriously often closed by landslides. You'd need to check on the day. If open it's a great road to travel, and no need for it to be sick-making if you have a considerate driver, but little point driving it in the dark.

I'd say it depends on the time of the day and which day - the traffic between Geneva and Martigny can be horrendous. In fact the Annecy to Geneva part can be a pain too in the weekdays morning. But the vista after Lausanne (over France the other side of the lake) are worth it!

On the other hand, the winding road of Gorges d'Arly plus the Chamonix route, followed by Vallorcine to Martigny, is less busy. Incredible views too. Just not at night if you're tired.
