Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Big Coat recommendations

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Does anyone have any recommended "big coat" recommendations? This is something that'll keep me warm and dry when stood around watching sport, or if current life continues, sat outside a pub having beers in cold conditions!

2 friends have recommended the North Face McMurdo jacket, but at £420 that's a bit steep for a tight yorkshireman!

So any suggestions for something of a similiar length and "warmness"?

I've got a very nice down Montane jacket, that packs down small but isn't warm enough for me sitting/standing around. Absolutely fine when walking around ski resorts/walking the dog etc.

Cheers,

Greg

Further south . Even warmer.

I always find it hilarious when you get the inevitable "snow has fallen in London" news reports and the entire population is dressed for an attempt on k2 .

If you're really looking for warm, in outdoor wear, then I'd recommend the Mountain equipment Citadel. I had one for about 3 years, but it was really only cold enough to wear it about 4 times. This might be the time of year you'd pick one up reasonable priced. You probably want a size down from your regular size, as it's designed to be thrown over other clothes belaying on winter climbs and so on.

Not a waterproof but buy a size larger to go over absolutely anything you wear and really good as a cover all keep warm item.

Mine's been everywhere, skied in it, always in car for use, warmed others, camping trips, etc etc and genuinely, brilliantly useful.

Tough as old boots, storm cuffs to stop the wind going up there, pleats on back of shoulders to stop the sleeves pulling up if you reach in any direction, superb pockets outer and inner that nothing falls out of, great value for just how much I've used it.

How about something like this, similar concept to the Citadel jacket (which is great, but maybe overkill for your use).
They are for sale on sportpursuit you'll need an account to view the spec and/or order one. I have no direct experience of the jacket but would imagine it would do the job for you and not too expensive. Note they are not waterproof but would take a lot too get wet in one.

+1 for ME down jackets. If the warmest is overkill (probably, it’s not the Arctic) pick one that’s not as thick and feel that warm Yorkshire glow you get from saving a few quid wink

For warmth you need a down jacket with the best fill rating you can get for the money.

If you need to stay dry you need a rain jacket with the waterproof rating you can buy.

You can get jackets that sort of do both. I have this one https://www.uttings.co.uk/p115749-craghoppers-bear-grylls-polar-jacket-black-pepper-black-cmp206-10k/

OP asks for a coat. Loads of recommendations for jackets. A long coat must be right for standing round. When I watch ski racing I wouldn't be without my long down coat

How about a traditional duffle coat? Toofy Grin It was good enough for sailors on Arctic convoy duty (and General Montgomery). Madeye-Smiley

@kitenski,
If you are ever near the outlet village place near Escrick just south of York they have a good North Face outlet store. Over the past few years while my daughter was at school nearby I managed to leave most visits with some decent bargains from base layers, bags and jackets.

Ah, but where does jacket finish and coat begin? Or could there be overlap, tentatively suggest mid peak buttock as "plimsole" region of delineation Very Happy

Jacket, coat, in some cases it’s just down to how tall you are. I also have a FatFace insulated parka. Cost about 70 quid. Waterproof enough that you won’t get wet on the inside and the moisture won’t do it any harm as long as it’s dried out properly. Did me several autumns/winters/springs in Leeds while I waited forever for trains to arrive.

So how does all the various down fill ratings work out?

ie the NF one says it is a 550-fill, the ME K7 says "300g (Size L) of Goose Down with a minimum content of 90/10 800 fill power"

So is the 800 fill warmer than the 550 fill or is there more to it than that???

*edit* the ME Kyros says "234g (Size L) of Goose Down with a minimum content of 90/10 800 fill power"

So for ME the weight indicates the amount of down, but can't seem to be able to compare that to say the NF one!

The fill power rating is what I've always gone by.

My wife's and mine are both 800. I believe 900 is the highest commercial available.

I was provided with a jacket to test for this season.

At the 2020 ISPO the jacket received two awards; ISPO Gold Award Outdoor Jacket, and the ISPO Sustainable Achievement Award.

It's from Swedish Brand Klättermusen - which I've just seen is on Sports Pursuit.

It's the warmest jacket I've ever worn and is nigh on unpractical for skiing as it's just too warm unless it's seriously freezing, but in my review I did comment that....

But what a jacket for a cold day on the lifts. I think I'd be relishing the idea of being stuck on a lift (just for a short while) pulling the hood over and sitting there nice 'n' toasty while others would be freezing their derrieres off.

And then sitting out on the terrace of the cafe, while others are finding it just a little too chilly, having to retire indoors, I'd just pull that hood up and soak up the rays.

I also commented that

We often reflect while walking the dogs twice daily along a deserted promenade that when a north easterly is blowing it feels far colder than anything we tend to experience in the Alps and the old nursery rhyme The North Wind doth blow, And we shall have snow seems quite apt. So prior to arriving in the mountains finally (more on that here) the Klättermusen Farbaute had become my firm favourite jacket.

More about it here

However if it's a coat, my OH and daughters were wearing these (DryRobe) every day when doing their daily swim in the sea from Jan to mid-March.

@Layne, yes but still not cheap, however I and others have used and very good experiences with the Arcteryx lifetime guarantee which kind of swung it!
