Online sites such as Asda and Tesco appear not to be working. Anyone aware of an issue?

@twoodwar, Travelex was hacked yesterday I believe. Perhaps they are using Travelex?

@Hells Bells, yes they are both via Travelex I believe, thanks. I have a little time before going, but was going for a 50/50 purchase!

Yes, we preload throughout the year - think there may be a £5000 per month limit tho'
Wishing I'd saved some of the prior transactions for today!

Also worth a look here to check if getting currency in advance is the best option. (It isn't usually.)

You're often better to get a specialist overseas credit card as it both gives better rates and you get the protection of using a credit card.

Yes and posted here

Travelex was hacked. You can still use the post office if you need cash in a hurry. Or a cash machine in the country you are heading to. Also if you are not in a big hurry then you can use revolut.

@sugarmoma666, understood, but no 50/50 purchase with the credit card, you get the rate on the day. I don't gamble as such, but can't resist seeing if I will pick a good time to buy!

As far as I am aware it is only Travelex that has been hacked. The other sites such as HiFX are still working

I always use Halifax Clarity credit card - no fees on ATM withdrawals so no fuss!

IME Revolut tends to work smoothly for folk doing the holiday cash thing.
They do offer account upgrades that, for a fee, allow larger sums to be exchanged without incurring punitive exchange rates. This is attractive to people needing to make bigger payments in Euros, for example, if you were buying a property but... Revolut got in to trouble a few months back for not checking up on their customers enough with the result that they had become popular with money laundering types. So they've gone the other way now and impose draconian measures when certain benchmarks are reached to 'force' compliance.
Now, all banks have to meet these same measures but while, for example, a Transferwise account will pop up a request for action and everything will be running fine again in 30 mins, Revolut don't seem geared for customer interaction and hence people have had significant amounts of money suddenly frozen with no clear path to resolution.
I had that experience with them - it took me 7 1/2 hours to fix and I was furious but then I discovered that I had actually done rather well and others were still unresolved having had accounts locked for weeks!
Since then my Revolut account seems to have worked fine but I have an elevated sense of trepidation wrt placing large sums in it.
All the detail in this thread.

This Travelex thing seems to have some legs. Rumours abound, but could have some tricky implications. Travelex have had their estate trashed and encrypted and a $6m 'ransom' placed on it. The hacker group claim to have taken GBs of customer data, taken over months of access. And that Travelex may have fallen foul of a security vulnerability in their VPN which they were warned about since September, and had been fixable since April.

+1 for a Halifax Clarity card, and if you want to save every last penny, pay off your ATM withdrawals using online or mobile banking the same day to avoid the interest and you have "near perfect rates" (according to MoneySavingExpert).

Apparently no foreign currency in any of the larger places in Durham.

Had a text from Barclays last friday. "Due to a technical issue at Travelex, cash withdrawls from your currency account are currently unavailable..... Travelex are working to fix the issue."
Can still transfer in/out as normal online.
Might explain why some larger places are running out of foreign currency if people are taking funds out there before travelling rather than ATM's in resort.
Only recently opened this account. no funds in/out yet, so not a problem. It was just as a reserve account for hols.
