very tragic, bears a striking resemblance to the incident on the "ski A&E" series, where a french lady skis down into a stairwell in Meribel, and is airlifted to hospital, thankfully she does survive.
you do wonder how these things can happen in modern day ski resorts, you would have thought there would be safety fences everywhere, as the possibility of novice skiers using these "home runs" would be greatly increased.

@terrygasson, it mentions Avoriaz, and I couldn’t understand how that could happen in town as it’s very well fenced off. However, had lunch been in e.g. Brochaux, there are a couple of points that are skiable, but rather steep and a bad fall at the top, over the edge, could easily be fatal.
Very, very sad.

This is my friends son. I only just found out and don't know anything other than what is reported. Absolutely devastating. He was a very experienced skier and a really talented young man. RIP William

Tragic indeed. Like Snoodles, I can't picture where it may have been. Avoriaz is a reasonably well laid out resort from memory.

EDITed to reflect updated report from France which contradicts the Scottish Times report.
Story in the paper this AM said he was walking back from lunch and took a shortcut between two buildings by climbing over a wall, a subsequent report published below says something entirely different to who knows.

Very Very sad, it alwasy is when someone loses their life through sport/hobbie.
As for the where/how, I'm not an Avoriaz specialist but aren't there cliffs to the right of the resort centre when you're on the Chair from the top of Prodains (sort of)?
The usual route back to resort is down the past the fantasticable then turn left to drop down to the Folie, possibly the unfortunate lad thought there was a route down the other way.

Report in scottish Times this AM definitely indicated he wasn't skiing when it happened. Suspect it was 1 + 1 = 400 in terms of accident in ski resort = ski accident.

In which case there's a few pedestrian lifts between levels in Avoriaz where you can walk around or take the lift.

William Reid was a young 25-year-old medical student. He died in an accident around 7 p.m. on Friday January 3 in the center of Avoriaz station. " It fell from a small rock bar about seven meters high , reports Gérard Berger, mayor of Morzine-Avoriaz. According to him, " he wanted to take a short cut by cutting through two buildings. "

Michel Richard, his assistant, went to the scene of the tragedy the evening of the accident. “ He was with his half-brother and his girlfriend. At the end of the day, when it was dark, they went skiing outside the Hôtel des Dromonts in the direction of the bowling alley, probably to get to the cable car. They were staying in a hotel in Morzine. The young man took a shortcut immediately to the right rather than going around by road. He fell and died instantly, ”reports the elected Morzine. Hamish Reid also recalls in the article that his son has been skiing for 15 years. He was a medical student and he loved surgery. He also planned to buy a house in Edinburgh with Kirsty this year.
The victim was wearing a helmet
The Montriond gendarmes are currently carrying out an investigation in order to " find the exact cause of death, " said Laurence Raison, acting prosecutor for Thonon-les-Bains. We need to know whether the path taken by the victim should be marked or not. We don't know why he went there . Laurence Raison specifies that the victim was on skis during the tragedy and that she was wearing a helmet. She also adds that William Reid was alcoholic up to 1.5 g / l of blood.

Contacted about the drama, Alain Blas, director general of the Morzine-Avoriaz (Serma) ski lift operator, explains: “ He had a bad fall. He was not on the ski area. Regarding lighting, it is the town hall which is responsible for it in the center of the station. "

Sad but not unknown in ski resorts - apres accidents can be worse than those on the slopes e.g. the river in VDI and the end of the world cliffs in L2A.

Yeesh, I think I know the spot, where the cut through from town back to Prodains is (there's a burger joint along there somewhere).
Alain Blas doesn't sound overly compassionate in that quote, more concerned about arse covering for Serma. I wonder if it's the exact quotation or if the journo has done a cut and shut on it.
