Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Crikey. Congratulations Ali! I still have my Ali Ross / Sunday Times Ski Perfect VHS tapes ( from 1995 ?) but sadly no way to play them any more.

@rob@rar, well, that's rather excellent.

Doesn't go far enough to erase Duncan Smith or Führage tho.

I have a copy of, “We Learned to Ski”, ... much charmingly dated but the section on savvy skiing still resonates.

It will be a lot more complicated than just this link, but it gives you a flavour that Ali has been there from the very early days

As a teenager in the mid 80s, I remember a scene from one of his videos where he stood on a trailer towed by a car in some non descript car park

The car drove in ever tighter circles and as his body adjusted to the forces acting upon it, he adopted the perfect skiing stance.

I think his point was, that anyone could put themselves into a natural skiing stance, be they stood on a trailer, skiing down Trolles or riding the no6 bus home.

His books and videos played a big part in my early skiing education.

He spent a lot of time in Tignes (he might still be there) and as a young hungover seasonaire I shared a few early morning rides on the Aeroski with him but I was regretfully too starstruck to have a chat with him.

At a guess, I'd say (long) service to the (British) ski instruction industry. Most probably nominated by people connected with BASI, and the relevant Cabinet Office selection committee felt he met their criteria. An M feels about right to me, an O would have been a bit generous. Although if Elton John is deemed worthy of an OM who knows these days...

Listed in weekend papers I can only find Alan Ross, listed under MBE and "for services to Ballymena community" so not sure if I'm looking in the correct place or if that is the same person?

We've got a couple of Ali Ross ski books in the house library too Very Happy

Apart from his contribution to music, Elton John has championed 23 different charities, including the AIDS Foundation he started. That last one alone has raised over £300m. He was also awarded the French Legion of Honour, so they must think he’s not bad too.

Now will the REAL Ali Ross please stand up?

I read the peanutski article but am not any clearer as to why he got his MBE, generally, if you are a member of the hoi-polloi, you have to do a bit more than being a ski instructor for a few years or being a "nice bloke" as I think Martin Bell said. For example enabling handicapped children to enjoy skiing, that kind of thing that take a bit more effort. So I'm sure there is a bit more to his MBE.

Having said all that Bradley Wiggins was honoured partly for his charitable work and if press reports can be believed (who knows these days?) one of his charities was a tax scam (cup) and the Bradley Wiggins Foundation gave money to his son and mates. So charitable work isn't always all it seems.

Nothing to do with charitable giving, apparently. An interesting list.

charitable work... that is: working for some cause not just digging into your pocket.

As for Ali Ross, I don't know him so am still none the wiser why someone would be awarded this award in general.

The only person I know personally who won an award in the UK was Helen Brotherton, who was active in conservation and this is why she was awarded.

@davidof, I meant that, according to the intro to the list, the award of CH has nothing to do with charity at all. It seems to be for being above averagely good at your job, I think, which is what a lot oof the minor awards are for as well. The system is inevitably capricious and inconsistent.

Okay, thanks. Interesting.

I guess, like most people, I've never really understood the whole thing. Still you wouldn't want to be honoured this year and have your address splashed all over the Internet.

@davidof, sorry, I edited my post while you were posting. Personally I wouldn't want to be honoured at all, let alone as part of this year's fiasco.
