Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tokyo - Day trip skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all, looking for some advice hopefully.

I have a week long stay in Tokyo booked with friends in early January, I'm hoping to try and get a day of skiing in as a sort of a tick in a box for doing some Japanese skiing.

Has anyone ever done this before that could offer any guidance? From the limited investigation I've done it seems you can ski Gala Yuzawa directly from the Shinkansen, which should be possible for a day trip. What I can't find any information on really is what would be the most efficient way of doing this to maximise my time on the slopes, where to rent equipment etc.

Any and all advice appreciated.

...and I would add, is it worth it?

By which I mean, is all Japanese snow JaPow, or is the famous stuff not within a days reach of Tokyo? Of course a days skiing is great, just wondering what this will or won’t show you about Japanese skiing.

Onsen... ah, I’d just go for the onsen in the snow...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Orange200,

Surely it must be worth it - especially as neil-ste has not skied in Japan before.

Exactly that Bergmeister. The choice is made much easier by the fact that the friends i'm travelling with are spending the day watching the wrestling, something I have no interest in at all.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yes I then thought for a skiing site I could have phrased the question better Smile

I looked into this a couple of years ago but my business trip didn't go ahead at the right time. I've had colleagues go to Yuzawa. All the info is here: https://gala.co.jp/winter/english/index.html
As far as I understand, the shinkansen station is the bottom of the lift and you can hire all your gear there.
You can book a ticket on this site that includes the return travel, lift pass and equipment hire: https://www.govoyagin.com/activities/japan-tokyo-gala-yuzawa-one-day-ski-trip-a-top-ski-resort-near-tokyo/2993?acode=tokyocheapo

When you say "wrestling" do you mean sumo? If so, go to the sumo. I love skiing, but the sumo is an amazing spectacle and something few westerners get to see. I had one of the best days out I've ever had at the sumo, and before that I thought I wasn't interested. It's not so much wrestling as the most amazing ceremonial spectacle.

No, I mean Wrestle Kingdom which is WWE style apparently. Not my thing at all. If it were sumo i'd be interested in going!

Yuzawa in week-ends can be very packed - maybe spend money for a taxi to Kagura/Naeba.

And taking boots along - might be a good idea!

Lots of info on the Austrialian web-site.
