Sort of misleading title  They don't fine off piste skiers, but those who chose to ski in areas that are closed due environmental issues. So off piste skiing is still ok just as it was until now, but you should respect areas that are closed.

Up the Creux Noirs chair (now closed) then a short hike and descended down the south facing slope towards Mottaret, then through some scrub to the lake and the cross-country course and then into Mottaret itself. Very nice fresh tracks down from beneath Col de Fruit.

How long ago? I'm trying to find out if there are any permitted routes as I've skied the Gebroulaz which ends in the reserve and it would appear that wasn't legal either - still I skied with a ski instructor and we were on a glacier which is also a no no.

it is a bit small but this is a map of the allowed routes (red = ski, green = cross country)

@davidof, as snowrider says, and as per the map - Col du Fruit down is permitted (as long as you don't head skier's right) - if you look on the IGN map this is actually just out of the boundary of the nature reserve. For folks with the old Vamos guide (late 90s edition) the couloir de la Ramée which drops from the top of the Creux Noirs is not allowed (and people get pulled in this one). All of the W side of the Aiguille du Fruit after this is out of the reserve.
Bottom of the Gebroulaz glacier descent is fine, as is the Col du Vallon - as long as you do not cut left before the valley floor (lots of signs here) - in Feb they pulled (and fined) loads of people here as most cut left early to take a descending traverse and avoid a flat pole along to get out of the valley.
SE bowl of the Col du Borgne (inside the soutern tip of the reserve) is also permitted despite being inside the reserve and not on the map in your post above. It is marked asa touring route on the IGN map and is now officialised as an accepted route - was chatting about this with one of the park wardens this winter - it was always tolerated but is now 'officially' accepted...
Everything else off the back of the Mt Vallon is out of bounds... (and again for those with the old Vamos guide the couloir des Mines is also sadly in this category...).

Got pegged in St Anton a couple years ago.

@offpisteskiing, @davidof Thanks for that , have updated my Vamos guide book accordingly !! To be honest I have stayed well clear of those areas on the Meribel side over the last few years as never understood what was permissible.
Do fancy a go at the Col du Vallon (good to know it is legal), I had a very big scare going in there in bad weather and had to hike out with my tail between my legs.

Isn't the issue in St Anton that your'e not allowed to ski through the trees?

@iainm, yes, there are forest areas where skiing is banned. Most, but not all, are fenced and sign-posted. The fines can be heavy, though rarely enforced.
BTW: rumour had it that 3 St Anton locals had their passes pulled for skiing in the then closed Steissbachtal. Given the hundreds of people that were doing it, I wonder what they did to wee wee off the powers that be.

@offpisteskiing, thread resurrection. Ahead of the 2019/20 season, is there an online list of the current permitted routes through the Tueda reserve? The national park website makes reference to permitted routes but does not actually say what they are. It isn't that I don't trust the information above, it is just that things can shift without warning.
