Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

TV show about Val Thorens pisteurs

I'm sure someone will be here to tell me this has already been mentioned here, but I could find it.

The film crew followed the pisteurs on Val Thorens for a week last season.

https://corporate.uktv.co.uk/news/article/w-hits-slopes-val-thorens-brand-new-series/

It's being broadcast on Watch every night next week and the following week.

sugarmoma666,

Brilliant! Thank you.

Last season we were picnicking on the slopes in Val T and shared a sunny spot with a chap that we chatted to over lunch. It turned out he was a fellow north easterner, working in VT as producer of a TV documentary about the ski patrol.

They had advertised the work to skiers in the TV industry, who he said were all really enjoying the work on location Very Happy I wonder why...

We are looking forward to seeing it. Fingers crossed that we have the required channel...

Watching this now, caught it whilst channel-hopping. Poor Irish lad was unlucky to do his knee in just before he was meant to move to Canada.

Val T looks stunning. Programme makes it look like there's always poor vis and skiing is super-dangerous though!!

Watched the first episode last night. TBH I fast-forwarded most of the stuff in the medical centre to the on-slope action, but clearly some great drone shots. @bergmeister I interviewed the producers of the programme for The Ski Podcast. Very interesting to hear exactly how they recruited and filmed in resort. There are two 10 minute interviews in each episode linked below. Check the Show Notes for exact timing if you want to skip direct to the interview:

I thought the programme was a bit average.

People go skiing. They fall over. They hurt themselves.

That woman was more interested in telling us how much skiing she was missing, when her young son was lying on the hospital bed with a busted collar bone rolling eyes

The three friends who went skiing every year were quite amusing.

I’ll stick with it, but I hope it gets better !

To be fair, there is nothing worse than missing out on slopetime when there is some sweet pow to shred.

It's like a donut behind a glass cabinet you can't quite touch.

and no ones mentioned the cost of these rescues, if you watch the programme it looks like you get taken off the mountain and get taken to hospital, get treated and leave, when it happened to me in val disere, the ski patrol on ther skidoos were behind me, he saw me fall and asked me if i was alright, i said i felt a bit sore in the elbow, he said hop on and we"ll get you checked out, the next thing i know i"m lumbered with a bill for £400 which i had to pay there and then, luckily the insurance paid it back, but these helicopter rescues must cost a fortune.

compostcorner,

About 5 years ago Mrs B suffered a knee injury on a ski tour, off the back of the Stubai Glacier. Our guide rang for assistance and she was eventually taken by heli to Innsbruck.

A month later we received the bill for the 48 minutes that the heli had been operational - flying from its base, to the rescue site, to the hospital and, finally, back to base. The cost was €4,800. Shocked

Luckily, our insurers settled the bill directly with the heli company. Very Happy

I quite liked the programme, but I have to fast forward through the blood&guts elements (too squeamish!).

Since the program is all about A&E, it's no surprise that it focuses on people having accidents on the slopes Smile But I am interested in the work that the piste-patrol do on the slope-side and then what the guys do in the med-centre.
I'll stick with it, but that's only because ski-sunday hasn't started their 6 episode run yet

Watched ep1 last night, Always29 reckons she recognised the doc who did the boy from when she twanged her knee, but that could be the morphine talking.

We had a bet to see if we could ID which snowheads the older lush trio were... Anyone owning up?

It's interesting.

Was amazed that the Scottish race skier ended up walking out the door after seeing how she landed.

There are subtle comments from the medics about the positives of helmet wearing - more in the tone of their questions and responses about whether the patient was wearing a helmet, yet the pisteurs don't all wear them....

Even if they feel they don't need them because they are such good skiers (has anyone ever banjoed a pisteur and caused an accident? What, never???) it would set a better example to be seen wearing them.

And the contrast between the "bruised" skier and the elderly French lady with the "exploded" leg as the Dr put it, shown directly after him was huge. She was so calm despite having a horrific injury.

If I were to summarise the causes of injuries from the programme they appear to be:
- catching an edge and falling
- being hit by someone out of control

I don't think there are many other reasons (ignoring the "Fall down a wall" or "miscuing a jump")?

I did think about it for a second but there are cheaper ways to get your hands on decent opiates than booking a week in Val Thorens.

I don't want to divert this into a helmet debate but...
If they've done either an organisational or personal risk assessment and decided they don't need a helmet, why would they wear one to set an example?

I seemed to have only managed to record the first 3 episodes from last week, but have enjoyed it so far, though i had to fast forward the hospital scene where the lady who was airlifted from la plagne had her leg operated on, a bit too graphic for my liking!!!!!

for the life of me i couldn't work out how the lady fell 15metres down a stairwell whilst skiing, even though the location was not discussed i presume it was in Meribel as one of the pistuers attending to her had a Meribel jacket on. would love to know where, so as where to avoid in future!!!

i didn't see what happened to the elderly lady with the "exploded" leg as that recording finished before the end of that episode, i could not believe how matter of fact she was, and it was so sweet with her granddaughter in the medical centre.

will carry on watching the rest of the series, even if it just to get my 3v snow fix before visiting les menuires in feb

Firstly I've not seen the episode yet so could be talking out of my hat but...
I believe evacuation costs are covered by our travel insurance. We've only used it once when our daughter broke her leg in a lesson and had already been evacuated to the clinic at the bottom of the slope (in Le Grand Bornand) by the time we caught up with her. It was 10 years ago so I don't have any records to hand but I'm 99.9% sure it was all covered by insurance and 99.5% sure they paid it directly i.e. we didn't have to pay and claim back.

Having said that, I have considered getting ski pass insurance just for the convenience - it's not a huge cost. The main thing putting me off is 'co-insurance confusion' with the ski pass insurers and travel insurers trying to pass responsibility back and forth but I don't know if that's a real issue.

The episode also highlights the carre neige and how that seems to be the magic ticket that answers all questions instantly. Got one? Doors open, velvet curtains part, choirs of angels, morphine smoothies for all etc etc. Own insurance? Meh, prove it then you're OK, now get your credit card out.

For reference, an ambulance from VT to Alberville is €390.

@PeterGroom, one company that does it is https://carreneige.com/en/sales-locations/ links to a lot of the resorts in France.

There is usually an option to add it at the point of buying your lift pass and it's only a couple of € per day. Annoyingly I couldnt't find it as an option when I bought our passes for half term to take advantage of an early booking offer nor can I see the resort in the list in my link so hopefully I can just top it up on arrival.

I was confused by that too. The "stairwell" bit was a bit of a distraction - she didn't fall down the stairs, she fell off a 15 foot high wall, that happened to be next to some stairs. I'd like to see the top of that wall - I can't understand how someone would build a 15 foot drop without putting a fence at the top of it. Perhaps there was a fence / wall, but the snow had built up to the top of it?

Decent programme, I'm loving how all the boots that need to be removed come off so easily. Try doing that with mine on a double fracture and I reckon my foot will remain inside the boot.

Ah, you missed how the nurse slid her hands down inside the boot and presumably held the foot below the fracture.
