Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

So, with the coming season our 30kg Boxita Suki says she's ready to go ski touring with us.
Our first thoughts were to strap a transceiver to her harness in case the worst were to happen, but after a chance conversation with Mrs Weathercam today on a tour I've decided against it, sorry Suki...........

Didn't Pieps have a mini transceiver broadcasting on a different frequency to be used with dogs etc? IIRC it only worked with their top line transceiver, which you'd have to switch manually to the new frequency (otherwise it would stay on the usual frequency).

Would a tracker like tractive.com be of use?

Constant GPS tracking of the pooch without interfering with other transceiver.

I love this comment on the OP's link.

Lou,

My border collie, Samantha, wears an avi. lung. I tape the mouth peice in her mouth and she does just fine. It also keeps her from biting our heels on the downhills. She’s been buried in 2 avalanches, one for an hour and we’ve found her through extensive probing, no problems. We hope to get her a new avi. airbag and toss her in to some really big avalanches. She really loves avalanches. We don’t put a beacon on her, we tie a cell phone on her and just call her up as we’re probing. It’ all great fun, what a dog!

@KenX, Recco reflector surely has the same issue as for a transceiver? Some people could be buried with just a reflector, particularly if the avi is close to / on piste.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@ecureuil, first responders ie the rest of the group/any onlookers will be using exclusively transceivers, only mountain rescue will have the Recco receiver, seems like an "acceptable compromise"
Nobody I would ski with would just have Recco as security and we'd be nowhere near close to/on piste with a dog.
If there's anyone left of the group on the surface they can inform the rescuers there's a Recco on the dog.......
Nothing's ideal in this world
