Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

But as it's you... maybe somewhere like CMH Galena? Expensive and there is absolutely nothing to do other than sit in the lodge? No internet (well, minimal) so that's maybe an advantage.

@Gerry, why don't they want to ski?

Is it because they've skied before and decided they hate it?

Or is it because they don't like other sports / think they might hate it?

If the former, then I agree that it could be a recipe for a miserable trip. If the latter... well, I used to hate almost all sports, but I love skiing.

Gerry Have you already booked the trip, or are you asking about locations with ski+non-ski activities? How old is the non-skier? Do they have any other interests e.g. art, music, just looking round places? Do they swim/gym? Would they be up for a spa 'wellness' thing? Would they be prepared to hop on a train to go out for a day? If the location isn't set, are the skiers prepared to drive to different resorts from a valley location? Does your non-skier speak German or French? How long do you plan to go for? Are you flying or driving?

Putting this into perspective. I had a drink with an old mate I haven’t seen in 20yrs. He always was a bit stuck in his ways due to the red lines he surrounds himself with. Anyway he never fancied skiing even though me and the rest of our mates tried to convince him to go.

Now he’s 60, retired, bored, fit as a butcher’s dog but has just turned down an offer from his nephew of a free ski holiday. It would mean him stepping over one of his redlines.

Another redline is the internet which he says he has no interest in. He’s single, wants to meet someone but believes the only legitimate way to ‘pull a bird’, as he puts it, is in a night club, pub or at a party.

He’s stuck in an 80s time warp and not happy. How can someone like that be helped?

The reality is that the singles have all left the pubs & clubs and moved to the internet.

With so many red lines, that’s why he’s single. Sounds a bit like my brother (who is not fit or 60 but is “computer says no” stubborn, and leads a hand to mouth existence as a result).

Relationships are about compromise. Why would anyone want to be with him if he’s so tough to not compromise?

He won’t shift on his decision (taken in 1997) not to ever go online. He’s got a smartphone FFS but doesn’t realise the potential of it.

He won’t go on the FREE ski trip because it doesn’t fulfil his criteria for a holiday which is to lie by a pool or on a beach and do nothing. To each his own I suppose but Jesus wept!

Good question.

He’s good company, a no baggage, perfectly normal in the social sense, geeza who always had a girlfriend but has fallen through the cracks into a single life that he wants to get out of. I think he’s beyond help though.

Aw, bless him. What hope is there for a bloke who still uses expressions like ‘pull a bird’, who is so hedged about by his red lines that he can’t step out of the 70s and out of his self-made prison. All the good will and wise advice in the world isn’t going to help your mate if he can’t see over those red line walls.

For the record, I’m a bit of an odd bod, a snowHead who doesn’t ski or board. Tried it, crocked my knee early doors and decided to stick to dancing. But I’m a fan of snowy mountains and with two sons who are ski nuts and a husband who’s getting there, I’ve managed to insinuate myself into a few bashes. While everyone takes to the slopes I take myself off for walks or hang out at the hotel and read or chat to those passing through. I love being among happy ski folk, listening to tales of the piste, the banter and the camaraderie in the bar and over dinner.

As for your mate - you could try telling him he’s right, he’d hate skiing, he’s way too old to think about trying it, he’d really wouldn’t want to meet all those fit ‘birds’ in the pub for a bit of après . . . . And then you can offer to go in his stead. snowHead Good luck.

Some people genuinely do not like the idea of a holiday where the weather is cold and there is more physical activity involved than lifting a beer glass to one's mouth. That's their choice. Same as I would never choose a holiday which involves large amounts of alcohol and potential skin cancer. Live and let live.

However, I can't see a 'bird' ever being interested in someone like your friend, internet or not. Toofy Grin

Maybe go to a ski-related Meetup social event. Once he sees that the Internet isn't all nerds and there's even some "birds" (sic) it might get him interested.
You join and take him as +1 so he doesn't have to go over any red lines.

He's not keen to ski and isn't an internet addict - so that makes him an inferior person? It might actually make him more interesting to a lot of people, women in particular. And he's managed to be able to afford to retire at 60 as well. Yes, tagging-along with you might not suit, but then it might: if you've chosen to stay somewhere that's more than some anonymous ski package tour hotelfest. Retired early, sounds like he has independent means, doesn't spend all day playing computer games or watching internet porn, actually likes to talk to people rather than chat online. Sounds a likeable enough person to me.

Read this and realised that, as a 54 yo “bird”, (and assuming he’s not so deluded that he thinks a woman half his age is what he’d go for) he’d be in the target age group for me, were I single.
A willingness to try new things is very attractive. Setting your face against something which could be fun and life enriching because 20 years ago you decided not to try it isn’t attractive.
My guess is that the reason he still takes this line is because his ego is in fact very fragile:
He likes to be the best at something and is scared he won’t be-skiing.
As he hasn’t used the internet, he knows/thinks it would be a daunting task to use it now (and is equally scared of making a tit of himself).
Women actually scare the pants off him (metaphorically speaking-as clearly his pants remain on at all times in their presence!). But ..obviously... it’s their fault that they don’t fall for him. rolling eyes

Large amounts of alcohol and potential skin cancer sounds like a fair few of my ski trips.
