Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What is the piste like in ruka for a beginner snowboarder and an advanced skier and boarder?

We went to Ruka 3 years ago. The beginner area is on the other side of the mountain from the village but there is now a gondola straight across to it. The run from the top of Saarua (16) into the beginner area is a very easy blue that might be manageable after a few hours of instruction. Apparently the beginner area is the largest in Finland (3 magic carpets and a button tow). There is definitely a snow park with at least 2 routes through, not as advanced as some I have seen (eg don’t remember massive kickers). The issue for advanced/intermediates is more the surface lifts at the edges of the mountain and the shortness of the runs. Short runs are great with children, as soon as you set off, you are ‘nearly there’! Not so sure for advanced adults. The mountain is pretty small (vertical is about 230m) so anyone beyond a beginner will have explored it thoroughly after a couple of days. The black runs are easy (4 is v flattering), fast and quiet. The slopes through the trees at Kelo, Masto and Pessari are all fun, but all need a T-bar to get back and IME boarders always moan about these. At least the lifts are also short! There are a few threads and TRs on here. We went in February so quite cold, always below freezing in the village (max -10C one day) so snow stayed in good shape. Limited on mountain dining options. Liked the bar under the self catering flats near the beginner area best but we often came ‘home’. Village is small but nice, large area car free and plenty of local sledging options. Dogsledding and snowmobiling is ace. Booze in restaurants/bars is expensive but everything else (apart from spirits) was not much more than it would be in UK.
