Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

From Arosa, Switerland to where? Feb half-term 2020.

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We're visiting family in Arosa, Switerland for a week just before or just after the February 2020 half-term (for us that's 15-23 Feb). Our family there all ski, so while I think it will be a fun week exploring the area with them, I've got the impression that Arosa is too small to be extremely interesting for more than a week. Can anyone recommend another ski area we could get to from Arosa that wouldn't be mobbed over the week of 15-23 Feb?

If it helps, it's just going to be me and my son, who's 10 years-old. We're both strong intermediates who are comfortable with anything on piste and we're eager to spend more time off-piste now. We don't need a pretty village or lively aprés-ski, we don't need a nice hotel or a spa, we just want really great skiing.

@diaphon, I think your impression of Arosa being too small for a week or more is out of date, given the lift link to Lenzerheide and the large area this opens up - both on and off-piste. There are also small resorts in the valleys for day or afternoon excursions like Tschiertschen, Hochwang and Chur Brambuesch. None of these are ever crowded! I could happily spend a fortnight in this wonderful ski area (apologies for sounding like the tourist office but I get a bit irritated when people dismiss Arosa as being too small!) Very Happy

You'll find plenty to keep you entertained for the week. It's pretty easy going with mainly reds/blues. Flat and cruisey. Quiet place.

I was out-of-town at a conference last week so I haven't had a chance to get back to this - thank you to @Rogerdodger, @LOTA, and @LittleBullet, for those very helpful replies! I'm feeling much more positive about Arosa, but I'm going to look into the neighboring resorts too.

We stayed in Lenzerheide (linked to Arosa) at Feb half term this year, and had a great time. I suspect it we totted it up though we would have done almost every run across the ski area twice. But it still worked OK, and fabulous scenery.

As @Rogerdodger says, Flims/Laax is not too far from Arosa - train to Chur station then postbus to Flims or Laax. You can rely on the Swiss postbuses to run as efficently as their trains, but the need to transfer will probably make it difficult to manage more than half a day's skiing starting from Arosa. Flims/Laax is slightly smaller than Lenzerheide/Arosa but some good runs there.

If you were planning to stay for a few days elsewhere then more options. The most obvious is Davos/Klosters, a big enough area to satisfy most people. I am not sure whether you can get the RhB narrow gauge direct from Chur or need to change at Landquart (which is where you change coming from Zurich). But you would equally have train access from Chur to St Moritz and the smaller resorts of the Engadine (I've no experience of those except in summer).

@j b, thanks for those details. My son and I are fans of "Stomp It Tutorials" on YouTube, so he loves the idea of going to Laax and trying the freestyle gym and terrain park. Do you know anything about freestyle skiing there? (In particular, a good basic instructor as neither of us has done any more "freestyle" than tiny jumps off the side!)

@diaphon, we have previously done a Feb half term in Laax. We are not remotely up to freestyle skiing ourselves, but it clearly had facilities and clientele far in advance of anywhere else we have been. One particular treat was a chair lift which takes you over the top of a huge half pipe and the expert freestylers practising looping the loop at every turn.

It is a major centre, with an indoor training set up near the base of the Laax lifts as well as all the snow parks. Ski Sunday has on several occasions showed the GB team training there.

I am afraid I don't know about instructors. We didn't have lessons of any sort there, but brother-in-law's family came with us and nephew (first time skiing) had lessons with I think Swiss Ski School.

The Laax piste map is somewhat disarming for a Brit with every major ski lift node labelled "Crap". I think it means peak or summit in Romansch, the ancient language spoken in remoter parts of Grisons.

Just back from our trip to Arosa and I wanted to update this thread for those searching the archives in the future.

We stayed in Arosa for 2 weeks. In the first week, due to wind and visibility, the link to Lenzerheide was mostly closed. There was still a fair amount to do in Arosa itself, we ended up spending lots of time in the (very small) snow park and playing around on the lift-accessible off-piste. When the links to Lenzerheide were open, we had a chance to explore there too. Overall Lenzerheide was less crowded and more beautiful, with amazing off-piste areas, beautiful forests, and stunning views. The down side of Lenzerheide was that we had to worry a little bit about timing it so that we could get the lifts back to Arosa before they stopped running. And getting from Arosa to the east side of Lenzerheide and back requires quite a lot of time sitting on lifts.

We didn't feel the need to travel further afield, to either Flims/Laax or Davos/Klosters, though both would have been easily reachable. The next time we go (and we will certainly go again) I think we'll schedule in time to see some of these other resorts. Overall I think Arosa is an excellent destination in the Swiss Alps, I'm really glad that we went.
