So after 20 years Whitelines magazine is going Online only... for your convenience In fact, the whole Factory Media stable of publications is ceasing paper-based publishing... SUK, Document, now Whitelines *sigh*...

Factory Media’s proposal to sacrifice print frees up the editorial staff to channel all that passion and energy into their websites, including [Whitelines]. As a team, we’re obviously gutted to see the end of a paper publication into which we poured heart and soul over two decades. But with the good ship WL celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, we’re also excited to see where – with a renewed focus and a healthy budget – we can take it next. Expect a slicker website delivering more unique video, more gear reviews, more how to’s, more travel… more of all the things you enjoy. In 2015, original, high quality content is the order of the day. |
Now, maybe my idea of high quality is different but if you've been of WLweb recently it's mainly dominated with buzzfeed style lists and nasty clickbait adverts.
Any suggestions where I should spend my coin next year for a non-US-centric snowboarding mag? 'The Reason' is getting the love over on SCUK, but I've never seen a copy.

i like it, and considering its free to pick up I think they do a fab job. I like the articles that they have and think they are comparable with those in whitelines

@Dave of the Marmottes, would that be Frequency? I doubt they'd let me buy it - not cool enough.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Snowboard Journal is long gone, I think.
Aye, losing White Lines and Dirt on the same day was a tough one!

Frequency is good, although I have only read one mag that a friend had. They do a European subscription but its a bit expensive for me

@snow_badger, a shade over £15 per issue does seem a tad steep...

Shame about Whitelines - I am currently subscribed, I like it, but not enough to pay purely for online content.
I am a dinosaur that actually enjoys the magazine coming through the post and taking time out to not stare at a computer screen.
On that note..............

Some interesting points being raised elsewhere about Factory Medias policy on photographs. Apparently they only paid photographers for their submissions if they appeared in print - anything that appeared online was credited but not paid for. As they've got no physical print anymore, wheres the content going to come from except scrapes from other peoples newsfeeds and wheres the impetus for photographers to cover 'niche' ends of the UK scene if all they'll get for their work is a hearty 'Thanks!' from FM/WL.com

Ugh their online offering is terrible. It is all "ten things you need on your holiday" "five amazing tricks" all either direct product placement or content nicked from else where.
Nothing of any value.

Hi all, i work on InTheSnow magazine (pretty much all ski orientated), and of course ski and snowboard are 2 very different beasts, do you think the 2 can mix in a magazine or do you think they need to be 2 different magazines...as an example I used to work in the boat industry and somebody that sails boats would never pick up a magazine with a powerboat on it...what you think?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Separate , because although you say it will be impartial , skiing takes presidence in other mags that ry to share both

Seconded - You'd be unlikely to attract the old readership of snowboarders with what is historically, a ski magazine. Plus you'd probably alienate a portion of your existing readership who probably have little to no interest in snowboarding.

@snow_badger, I'll not begrudge them a few bob to send me a seasonsworth in the post. It'd probably cost me more than £2.50 an issue to travel to a store which had a free copy to give away anyway.

All hallows eve is nearly upon us and what should rise from the grave but Whitelines!
After a 4 year dirt-nap, with its ghost rattling chains online, its back in a coffee table esque format. 250 pages apparently for £12.99. Available from TSA and online shop.
