What are taxis like in Chamonix for accessing the different areas. I am thinking of using a transfer from Geneva rather than hiring a car which seems a bit pricey. Is the skibus service any good?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Ski bus depends a lot on time of year- peak time in busy weeks is very uncomfortable. Off peak is great, usually a bus every 10 mins on main routes.
Train is also good but only one per hour.
Taxis are pricey though many are minibuses so if you’re a big group they are relatively efficient. E50 for Cham to Argentiere (10km)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Eddy, I don't really know as my only experience of taxis was poor. Wanted to go Cham - LesHouches and back for dinner.
Not only expensive but "pick up at midnight? You are 'aving a laugh. bug orff. I don't work after 10 o'clock"
I'd work around trains myself.
Or hire that car.

If you don’t want to use the bus system or trains to get to the slopes, you should try the transfer companies. Most do in resort transfers as well. I tend to use haute transfers. If it’s 8 or you it works well (full bus). I think it’s about €70 return to the slopes.
I do like the train trip to vallorcine and back if you want to ski the vallorcine/le tour area and are near a train stop.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Chamboy, not the cheapest option if you are on your own...
Central to Vallorcine on train not much slower than driving and a lot more relaxing.

It’d be amazing if Uber or something similar ever makes it to Cham. There are loads of people looking for a bit of extra cash, and so many people who want to skip the drunken walk home at night or bus hell in the morning. I really think it would take off in a big way.

@Steve77, and you wonder why the back roads are so busy at night? (No police checks).
I don’t think places like Cham fit Uber’s model (jack down prices, put incumbent services out of business, gouge customers) ... (P.S. this is a precis from one of their own investor presentations).

Thanks for the information. There will be 3 of us travelling from Geneva and spending 4 nights in Chamonix at end of month. I may try car rental.
