Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wind and rain at Samoëns 1600 today. I arrived on Monday so got to experience the fresh snow over the last few days. As miserable as it is outside I've been enjoying this excuse to rest. Hoping the rain turns to snow overnight...

Here until the end of the season now, and I'm solo for the next month. New to the area so am on the lookout for people to ski with as well, should anyone find themselves in a similar situation (have avi kit and happy to go mostly anywhere.)

Out in Morillion at the moment . Heavy rain up to top of Sairon couldn’t go any higher yet as lifts closed. Pistes are getting destroyed by the rain. Did a few runs this afternoon - horrible !coupled with 9 euros for a pint of Guiness at the pub in 1100. Also one if our party had a phone stolen there ! Crying or Very sad
Useful to be a nice resort but the prices here are crazy

Today was a beautiful bluebird day. Lots of great skiing. Snow great above around 1300. Last bits of runs into Morillon 1100 and Les Carroz are artificial snow but everything above is great. We’ve had 2 great days. Supposed to snow tonight nothing happening yet.

Lots of rain last night at village level. Fell as snow up top. And turned to snow at some stage down low a sprinkling. Haven’t ventured out yet. Looks like whiteout up top.

Changeable today. Rain down low snow/icy particles up high. Looped around Morillon 1100. Sairon Marvel. Had fun. Plenty of snow cover until the bottom. Brown patches coming through artificial but had a great time.

In Morillon 1100 at the moment, lots of rain today, I'm currently listening to them bringing up lorry loads of snow to the base stations.

Still, we had a great days skiing, soaked, but good fun. Lesson with the ESF, lots of tree runs and off piste stuff.

Plenty of snow up top, it's skiing well, the last 50 meters to the village are looking rough, but there's enough there to get you home.

Slushy everywhere currently - even at the top of Fred. The whole world is in Flaine. And most of those people are drinking beers in the sunshine now.
More rain forecast for tomorrow but hopefully a wee sprinkle of snow on Thursday night and a cold snap should sort things out and eek out the fun!

Went to Flaine this morning left glorious sunshine behind at tete de saix to meet cloud in flaine. Spring snow everywhere. Scratchy early and soft later on. Came back over after lunch and no sunshine. Bottom of coulouvier earth coming through. The rain yesterday did a lot of damage. Les esserts is slush. Temps up and everywhere low melting. On the plus side all the little streams and waterfalls are running very pretty.

Flaine was crazy busy until lunch, which seems to have been because other skiers from other stations kept arriving. Blue skies at top, even if some cloud along the way. had rained for top down, so while pistes fine the off piste was spoiled. Tolerable after lunch, by which time sun had softened the rain crust.
Great base if the rain gives rise to snow.

Lots of rain last night, it had stopped by 7am and at 1,600m the last of the 'rain' fell as snow. Temperature around freezing. Very poor visibility due to low cloud. I'm not optimistic about the state of the pistes but this depends when the rain turned to snow higher up.

Spent Thursday mainly above Morillon. Corne had good snow, albeit bumps. 1100m vertical from top Coulouvrier to bottom, so skied it twice. Over in Flaine off piste fairly thankless, but Lucifer also good snow. Seems the bumps less impacted by rain?

Back home after a great week. Our chalet owner said we got the best week in the last 6. Shame about the rain tho. There was lots of skiing done and we only didn’t ski one day out of the 6 so we’re happy. Last day lower down was slush and artificial but still skiable. Our American friends were very impressed by the vastness of the grand massif and the length of the runs. Hope to return again next year. Bye for now.

may be of interest to anyone affected by lift closures during the storms, we were in morillon the week of storm Ciara which shut all but 2 lifts for one day and another day later in the week morillon was open but no links. I filled in a form online with pass numbers and yesterday got a €177 refund, which was a nice little bonus!

Just arrived today and to be honest have been expecting something to happen during the course of the week, so the closure doesn't come as a surprise. Was out today in Carroz and slushy spring snow.

Never seen the pub in Morillon Village so busy out of half term, seems everyone (including me) is out for a last drink this evening before closing up.

Will put this conditions update (29 Dec 20) in last seasons thread.....it's surprising no sH's out here, considering even some of the more obscure threads are well ahead of normal pages this season, you know England, Scotland, Wales, Verbier etc

So 6 of us headed into unknown territory, starting near Samoens on Route des Allamands, and looking for the path up to Tete de Bostan.
It didn't begin well with all of us parking at the wrong (300m lower) car park, but that extra walk did allow us to help out a group of locals whose van had slid off the road.

It's a long mellow uphill track through the forest, finally opening up a little around 1600m. The weather really deteriorated at this point though so we headed for the refuge around 1800m. We had read about the big open ski fields above this point, up to 2600m at the Tete, but there was no way we could carry on given the conditions. In any case, the french lads we had helped out earlier arrived at the refuge and told us the top section wasn't great for snowboarding as there is a long flat section.

So we started to head down, very cautiously as we had no idea what lines to pick, and could barely see each other. Made a quick video of the trip.....shame the conditions didn't allow for some better footage....poor viz above 1600, unknown terrain and a lot of shaky / splashed camera.

Not sure I'd go back though, as it's a very long hike in along a narrow path....and that's the only way down as well.....still we made the most of it and it's always a laugh in a group, despite the freezing cold, wind, getting soaked and falling over.

@polo, Some great powder - how long did the whole thing take?

About 3 hours, but it’s only 600m vertical so am sure it can be done a lot quicker, we were slowed down by not starting at the highest car park, then the poor viz and just not knowing where we were led to lots of discussions and stops. It only opens up above 1500-1600m so the vast majority of the trip to the refuge at 1780m was in the forest.

It must be amazing in better weather! So you parked at 900m, but it's possible at 1200m (Plan des Arches, says the map), right? Everybody talks about Tete de Bostan but I don't fancy the forest part - now looking at trying to get to the refuge from Morzine (lac des Mines d'Or) via La Golèse, out of interest why did you try from the Samoëns side?
