Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all,
I'm organising a skip trip for a group of 8 people in the second half of January. I love Dolomites and have my eyes set on Madonna di Campiglio, primarily because we have a number of very inexperienced skiers, but also some advanced skiers in the group.
However, I'm concerned if the snow conditions will be good at the time. The onthesnow.co.uk gives a decent snow record in the last years, but I'm not sure if I can trust it.
Has anyone been there at the time? Would there be snow? Is it slushy? Should I look somewhere else?
Any advice appreciated!

MDC is known for vast snowmaking, I've read in the past 95% of the area covered so can't believe in January there will lack of snow, neither slushy... January can be very icy though

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I went late January one year - extensively cannoned - off piste a bit shonky due to sparsity of natural recent snow and high daytime temps/overnioght refreezes i.e. crusty mank.
Pistes were fine - only sun facing in the pm would cut up a bit (getting back from Folgarida there is one hi traffic red that people were struggling on while I thought it great soft bumps)

Lack of snow almost certainly won't be a problem. The snowmaking operation at Madonna is incredible. Pretty much every piste is open for Christmas regardless of whether it's snowed or not. Of course this means ribbons of artificial snow criss-crossing green fields which feels a bit odd but I prefer it to going walking!
You say some of the group are very inexperienced? Madonna isn't great for beginners, the nursery slopes are out at Campo Carlo Magno and not that easy to get to from the main village. Once you can get down average blue runs then there's loads to go at.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks everyone! That's very good news.
@Sailbad the Sinner, yes the two of us never skied before. But we hope to get them a ski instructor at least for a day or two. Hopefully it can be arranged

Don’t miss a go at Folgarida too, it has got some nice beginner runs and a nice black for for advanced ones!
The journey folgarida-MdC is quite beautiful, long and gentle tree line runs. The opposite journey has few challenges for beginners so careful with that

There is a red that links mdc with Florigada and the other area that is hilarious. Pure carnage as timid skiers and novices feel their way down

I was in MDC with a group in mid January this year. The snow was fantastic and the town is lovely. You'll love it

Went twice in Mid January, the snow was fine, no problems, a tad icy in places but in January that isn't surprising.
