Hi All
Looking to ski for a month in France next year and am researching the costs. On this single question, the hire shop booking pages won't give an answer; and the shops won't reply by email (maybe too early?).
So, can anyone shed any light? Might it just be 7 days x 4; or is a discount likely? The skis would be one up from budget, or thereabouts. Thanks
Any steers where I CAN get an online quote will be happily accepted.
Why hire not buy? Cost, and the convenience of having any problems solved in resort overnight. Happy to take advice on that too.
Cheers
CG

@Charliegolf, Most of the hire shops won’t be replying because they will be closed at the moment.

Use a privately owned and run hire shop and I'm sure you'll get a good deal. Probably a lot of them are closed as it's between summer and winter seasons - give them a month and try again.

Not what you've asked - but have you considered buying a discounted pair of skis from the likes of Glissshop (40 - 60% off) - which could work out cheaper than hiring for a month....though not having the versatility of swapping about.

Depending on the deals you can get (once the shops re-open for the winter), and assuming you have your own boots so are just looking to hire skis/poles it might be worth looking at buying.
Just picked a random week/resort/hire shop on a well known online ski hire broker website and it gives a weeks ski hire as 80E/week (320E/4 weeks) for 'red' skis, such as Rossignol Pursuit 100s. A quick Google for those skis has them retailing around 200E. So maybe walk around town on your first day asking what deals people will give you while keeping an eye on prices for basic skis/and discounted ex-hire skis. If you do end up buying because it's cheaper but don't want to lug them home most resorts will have a Facebook group you can list them for a few quid/free - or just pop them in the rack outside the apres ski bar you hit off the slopes on your last day and leave them there to be 'recycled'

@BobinCH, Grand Massif, March.
@Old Fartbag, Yes, and that might well be the way we go.
@Mjit, Thanks for that. Would the hire shops routinely have ex hire skis for sale?

It depends on resort but certainly you seem to be able to walk around Morzine any week of the season and a couple of the shops have "Ex hire for sale" racks outside - usually with the same (models of) skis in them. I'd guess after just 4 or 5 weeks a hire shop's broken even on an average pair of skis so just pop a pair in the "Sale" rack because they'll make as much selling them as continuing to hire them, and it's another way to get people in the shop.

@Charliegolf, in many places many shops will be totally closed for business. Many won't answer emails anyway hahahah - t's France.
Most sell off ex-hire kit but to be honest, from what I see in the racks around Chamonix, it's not great value. I wouldn't do that.
Anyone will give you a quote for a month's rental, bear in mind the first week or two in March are still French school holidays so busy and unlikely to be discounted.
I'd probably buy if I were you.

Where are you headed for CG?
There are shops in Challes Les Eaux near Chambery and Annecy called Troc Sport that have loads of ex rental skis for sale, all shapes and sizes priced from about 50euro's a pair. They'll set up bindings if etc if needed as well.
I'm sure there are similar in all the bigger towns near ski areas, Chamonix valley etc.
Also ekosport for new stuff, have a big shop in Albertville, always seem to be selling some gear off extremely cheaply.

You know it makes sense.

@Charliegolf, are you able to make either of the Oktobertest that are running? That way you can try out different skis to help your decision on what to buy, also certainly after the last one quite a lot of them became available to buy with demo wear only on them - how I bought my current skis

Just buy. Month long rental seems nuts for the supposed advantage of perhaps having them tuned once for free. If you have a car the local Decathlons should be clearing stock by March or if you put some graft in to research fair prices buy an ex rental pair after decent negotiation.

@Charliegolf, as others have said you’re probably better off buying than renting for a month, although if you find an independent shop you should certainly be able to negotiate a decent rate. To buy, the cheapest would probably be a 2nd hand pair via local FB buy and sell group. Just post up nearer the date what you’re looking for and you will inevitably get offers from locals and you can usually try them out before buying. For example I picked up a pair of lightly used 3 yr old high quality Dynastar GS race skis for 150chf which would retail for 800chf. 2nd hand skis from ski shops tend to be heavily used and over priced compared to private sale IMO. Alternatively if you want to buy new check out 18/19 models on Sports Conrad

Wow, a flood of activity when my back was turned! Buying certainly seems the way to go, and you've collectively left me with no good reason not to. There's also plenty of places to look too. Thanks all.

that long? I'd have thought a couple of weeks, given what they pay for them.

If you are off to the Grand Massif it is worth checking out https://shop-skiclinic.fr/?lang=en - they are in Cluses. We used to do season rental for our kids when they were growing up. They have stopped that service now but had some great deals on ex-rental skis.

https://www.verneret-sports.com/fr/# depends on where you are based in GM.
We've used this shop in Morillon village over quite a few years, always good service, adaptable for number of days, good selection of ski type and willing to change during rental.
