Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@chocksaway, do you have a recommendation for a boot fitter in Tignes with a reasonable offer of freeride touring boots for a noob?
People here mentioned a moody but extremely skilled JoJo who supposedly retired...

@drporat, For touring boots I would go to Mountain Attitude on Rue de la Poste - run by the two Ludos (short French for Ludovic). Having said that they were trying to sell the business but it was still there last May.

Not sure if Jo Jo does touring boots, the rumours of his retirement have been around for years, I will no doubt find out when I arrive!

The Tignes glacier (https://tignes.roundshot.com/grande-motte/) is looking a bit grim on the webcam at the moment, so maybe not? And it is potentially due to open ("Depending on snow conditions") next Saturday! Still, at least the webcam shows the glacier, unlike the Val one:-

Decision later as to whether they open. More ice has melted since they closed in ... the second half of July was it now? It seems so long ago. Anyway the ice under the start of the drag lift has largely gone and given it is rocks underneath it needs a lot of snow to open, probably more than will fall this week.

Maybe they'll have to get out those snowdome plans they had.

The Tignes glacier has been destroyed this summer.

Very sad to see its collapse.

When SnowHeads first began, you could ski this 365 days a year.

First pic is Jul, 2019.

Second pic is Sep, 2019.

The opening of the Grande Motte on Saturday has been delayed until enough snow has fallen to allow skiing to take place. The precipitation forecast for this week may be snow above 3000m, but not enough to make it safe. There is a crumb of comfort in that the Jetstream is showing signs of moving south into net week.

Can't be long until the winter season is extended into Jun and leave the summer for pedestrians.

I concur.
About time to think about the season pass. Hips being injected Thursday to provide lubrication that will hopefully last a season. A snip at £450 a hip!

I don't think that would happen. I seem to remember that Tignes stopped being a 365 day resort due to it being uneconomical to run the lifts on the glacier - lack of people buying tickets, despite there being plenty enough snow to slide around on. And Tignes has just reduced its May winter season opening to tie in with VD.

I think people would get use to it; if they knew there was absolutely no skiing until mid-end of Nov. Tignes and the other glacier resorts that open outside of the winter season have some hard thinking to do in the coming years.

Hi there. Does anyone have a recommendation for a ski instructor in Tignes who is good with kids? We're out over Christmas (1st time braving it there in the school holidays) and would like to get our 5 year old 2-3 private lessons. He got his 1ère étoile after some private lessons last year and has done a bit of skiing at Hemel over the summer, but he says he'd still be happier in privates than in a group. Thanks very much.

Another dusting on the glacier one suspects. Dusting on the Panoramic. In resort from 1st Dec until at least 21st. May stay with a mate in Val for a week after that. No future plansafter that until likely state of hip becomes clear.
