It's not offending.
No different to any hotel in the UK having war memorial photos & paraphernalia on display.. Or is it more acceptable because we Won?
Typical Germany trying to hide & deny the horrors they caused.
Being out in the open - is at least a reminder so people don't forget as it is a constant reminder.
I am sure many of the UK people who served in the Gulf did not believe in why they was sent to war, but I bet their parents still proudly display their photos on the mantlepiece at home.

Hope the hotel lose, especially for continuing the court case in light of the proven Nazi affiliations.
Remember 'grandpa' in your thoughts not on the wall. Especially if this is the 'only' photo ever of him.
Ignorance is not a defence.

The Perpetually Enraged will alway find something to trigger them.
Do a little research. The Allies also committed some fairly heinous atrocities. Should the actions of a minority besmirch all? If you believe that, then push to also have all the memorials to Allied soldiers pulled down.
There were honourable warriors on both sides, as there were monsters. In this particular case, no evidence has been presented that these soldiers were guilty of wartime atrocities. Being a member of the Nazi party is not necessary and sufficient proof of that. People joined the Nazi party for a variety of reasons, from true belief to survival.

@Mr.Egg, I'm afraid you turning things around. In a rather awkward way actually...
It is the Austrians who have been in denial (and still are apparently), definitely not the (West-)Germans. Like in Britain, in Holland too the Germans were viewed like this (not so anymore in Holland), but it is/was not accurate. The Germans have been teaching there kids to be very very conscious.
Unlike the Austrians, who have always been hiding unpleasant things, under the alibi of being "höflich" (Also before WWII, probably even back to the times of the Habsburger). The Austrians have always been able to tell that it was the Germans. Even while H. himself was Austrian of course...
This story is actually quite telling: one must be very naive to hang pictures of relatives with swastika's in a hotel lobby. It obviously is not a 'very commercial' thing to do. To put it mildly of course...
Apart from the insensitivity: Nazi symbols are forbidden in Germany, The Netherlands...would guess that about 99% of Gerlos tourism is coming from these two countries.

I believe the Swastika is illegal in Austria - not sure if this is applicable to portraits / pictures though.

Prohibited symbols and signs
In Austria, the Swastika and the double lightning bolts of the SS, as well as National Socialist emblems, symbols and characteristics are prohibited. Each symbol has to be appraised individually as many occupy a legal grey zone. |

Austria strictly prohibits the public display and/or proliferation of all insignia/symbols, emblems, uniforms (full or partial), flags, etc., clearly associated with the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP, commonly known as the Nazi Party). There are legal exceptions for works of art (including books, films, theatre performances, computer games, and educational/memorial public exhibitions, etc.), these however do not apply if the respective work promotes National Socialism (as this is generally prohibited in Austria). The law has been amended to include commonly recognised replacements or slightly modified depictions of Nazi symbols. Violations of the Badges Act 1960 (Abzeichengesetz 1960), which prohibits the public display of Nazi symbols, are punishable by up to € 4000.- fine and up to 1 month imprisonment. However, if the violation is deemed an attempt to promote National Socialism, the Prohibition Act 1947 (Verbotsgesetz 1947) is applied, which allows for up to 10 years imprisonment.
Trading medals, uniforms or other memorabilia however isn't illegal in Austria. |

@ulmerhutte, stepping away from any of the specific individuals involved in this case I’d be very wary of drawing any moral equivalence between the actions of the national socialists and others. I’d hope most people would be.

This is not uncommon in the region.
Over-nighting in mountain huts round Garmisch, some will have old photos of Gebirgsjager on the walls.
If staying in a village rather than a resort, the church grave yard may have a military section covering both wars.
Much like some English graveyards, it expands on the war memorials to the Imperial German Army from the First World War.
In the one I saw, 80% of the names were from WW2 theatres like Eastern Front, Balkans and Italy.
For more on the Eastern Front and its horrors, try Dan Carlin's Hardcore Histories "Ghost of the Ostfront"

Surely the point is that the hotel owners have poor judgement in displaying the photos in the first place and have doubled down on it by taking out legal action on a guest who made reasonable comment.
The fact that some modern day hard rightists want to defend "equal rights for Nazis" or whatever is a side show.

Just to clarify - are you saying the Austrian Hotel owner or the German guest who complained is trying to hide/deny something?

Understanding of German history, dealing with the same and current political situation of original poster clearly less than zero.
Also a bit rich from somebody coming who i assume is a citizen of a country who is still - give or take - to a large degree in total denial of the disastrous effects British subjugation and colonising had on the fabric of the victimised countries. Understanding of resulting post-colonial issues born out of a direct result of British imperialism probably also non-existent.
(Mind you that it is if the poster has actually realised that the British Empire no longer exists...)

UK apologised for its colonial past as well as paying compensation settlements.
Germans still in denial. Settled up with Greece yet? or still denying it.

It's not difficult or rocket science.
It's about choice.
And this hotel owner chose not to.
Surprised it hasn't been an issue before.
