Seems to be aimed at encouraging day trippers from Geneva / Lausanne etc. Although assume many of those have bought the Magic Pass? Good service, making use of the new upgraded station in Le Chable.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@BobinCH, out of interest, any details of what the upgrades to Le Chable station consist of?

They’ve completely rebuilt the station underground, allowing the big double decker trains to use the station, additional parking on the roof and a direct, covered access from the station to the gondola. Apparently residential and commercial developments to follow...

Looks good, but is the service scheduled to depart GVA at 7.30am? Not so good for for those flying in to GVA?

You'll need to Register first of course.

@BobinCH, joined up thinking from a regional government and a railway? Surely not.
Sounds like they'd planned this all along.
Wouldn't happen in Bulldog Britain I can tell you!

Yes I think the article says the departure from GVA will be in the region of 07:30. Possibly more convenient for someone flying into GVA in the evening and getting an early train transfer to Verbier the next morning....

Yes it’s designed for locals in GVA / Vaud as opposed to tourists

@BobinCH, fvck tourists. Fvck business. [/Cummings]
To be honest, as almost always, the Martigny change is pretty painless and anyway there’s a nice bar near the station.

OK, but a little confusing for me as why start it at the airport? Surely Geneva-Chable makes more sense than GVA-Chable (he said, without much understanding of train lines in that part of the world)?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@rob@rar, because the Airport is literally the end of the line? Quite a few trans-national and international (I’m on a limb on the international) services start and end there. It sort of makes sense.
Bizarrely, that means that Cornavin-Airport services have a very un-Swiss unevenness to the timetabling.

If, as I understood, it will take 90 mins, that’s a 45min saving on the current shortest time. Makes it competitive with Chamonix...

In previous years, SBB has run a regular ski train GVA-Martigny with limited stops for connections in the Vaud (at Aigle, for Champéry and Villars/Diablerets). My recollection is there's a bar and more open carriages, for people carrying their ski gear. I definitely saw one such 5-6 years ago at GVA late morning. Whether they still do this, I don't know.

I see that you can't buy tickets for this online, it says to buy locally. I wonder why? Normal train tickets for the day are available
It might be a nice alternative for me to sitting in the traffic between Monthey and Montreux on the way home
