Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@rdsweb, Well I would take a France Meteo forecast updated twice daily from their office in Bourg St Maurice over most....
If you drill down the France Meteo is saying much the same as the snow forecast one.

@chopkins13, Ok so far, but all day Monday it was closed for maintenance, the run down to La Roche was chaos added to by huge piles of man made snow under each snowmaker - plus the usual out of control too fast teenagers! Because of that I would guess it wasn't planned maintenance.

@chopkins13, came up it earlier today. It’s got bizarrely pointed seats but apart from that was running fine.

I wish they’d just replace it. So unreliable for such a vital link!

@chopkins13, Seconded! Talking of vital links, Verdons Nord will be replaced this summer with its start point being near the Colorado lift, the piste rescue building being moved to an enlarged Funi Plagne building and the Kiddies area being moved to between Funi Plagne and Colorado.

Err, it was replaced wasn't it? Twice!

The missus didn't like the new chair style but it was working fine when we were there at Christmas.

Well that is good news. Some good piste and off piste accessible from that chair but it's bloody slow and cranky as it is.

@boredsurfin, presumably the new Verdons Nord will start from near the top of Colorado, not the bottom?

snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
@chopkins13, Nope, at the bottom in Plagne Centre roughly where the old Z drag lift set off from. Basically half way between Becoin and Colorado on the snow front

Which will leave Colorado to serve the new Buffalo Park and the Milka Run plus all those little off piste adventures the Instructors like to take their kids classes down! (and the sledging run in the evenings)

Which might make the snowfront at Plagne Centre even more of a PITA to get across. Crying or Very sad It appears to be designed primarily for people actually staying there rather than anyone passing through. Coming from say Aime 2000 trying to get to Bergerie is a long flat traverse across the snowfront. (Or a slight shorter slog and all the way up up Colorado/Grand Rochette, or via 1800). Adding a new lift in the middle is only going to inhibit anyone trying to keep up a bit of speed at the start of that traverse. Going the other way is slightly easier - but again might not be with a new lift in the middle.

@ecureuil, we had that very dilemma this very day. After coming up Envers and heading for Bergerie I asked the wife if she was up for potentially polling across the front de neige or going down to Plagne 1800 and coming up the Melezes chair. Easy choice down to Melezes and onto Bergerie and on from there. The piste down to Melezes was totally deserted. Maybe try that next time

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
@rdsweb, that piste often is very quiet, as is Melezes lift at any time of day other than first lifts. Definitely the best way from Aime 2000 to Bergerie! It’s a vital option when trying to complete the Montalbert to Vanoise Express in as short a time as possible!

Quite right. For 2000 to Bergerie go via 1800.
Only go via Plagne Centre if you really need the exercise.
The suggestion new Verdons Nord might start at Plagne Centre is excellent idea.

@Jonpim, New Verdons has been presented to the Council and it has been agreed there, but now it goes off for Regional Environmental (DREAL) approval. DREAL delayed the Montalbert Gondola by two seasons!

There was also a presentation on the proposed route of the new Glacier bubbles, controversially they no longer go through the building, The mid station being moved to the area by Col de Forcel! Julian Lizeroux's Mum, who is on the Council, is dead against the proposal!

Let's hope the new Verdons isn't done by the people who did Envers.

It amuses me to compare the Envers lift which became 'serviceable' a year before the new Comborciere lift in Les Arcs. Envers is a new design, presumably supposed to be better than previous designs. Comborciere is a second hand machine bought from Val Thorens. No prizes for guessing which one I would rather use.

@Alastair, Envers was a radical new design unique etc etc wasn't even type approved, licensed, certificated or anything! A royal balls up from the start, almost needless to say no one that was involved in the decision is still doing the same job!

And interesting picture in that article.
Definitely not the Carella lift - is it actually anywhere in La plagne?

Meantime it is still snowing. Trees going white, road gone white, and can't see 1800 lift from out apartment.

Picking the local knowledge - does the snow park in La Plagne still have a half pipe? I'm having a bit of a mid life crisis and used to be able to ride the pipe (so-to-speak) fairly well, so was hoiping to see if the knees can still take it.
I know Les Arcs doesnt have one, but there are pics of one in Plagne Bellecote previously. Heading out to Les Arcs in a few weeks, so if there is still a ridable pipe I'll pop over.

I gather the specification for competition half pipes was changed and SAP had the wrong sized machine to cut the slopes as a result the HP is no longer maintained as a full sized affair.
All that exists in the first 1 or so meter of each wall - it can still be a laugh to go thru but its not the proper job anymore.

Boo.
Thanks for the updates. They arent the only resort thats ditched them (see what I did there...). The Olympics have lead to bigger and bigger walls which needed bigger and bigger cutters to shape. Shame really as they end up being impossible to learn on due to the speeds needed to clear the lip.
I'll pop over to ride a few laps of the park I'm sure, they look good from what I've seen previously.

Just back from a fantastic week - snow conditions are holding up well, albeit a bit scratchy on some lower runs, and skiing in the sun has been amazing.

Went over to Les Arcs on several occasions and the skiing over there between the trees above 1800 is superb.

It started snowing in La Plagne from about 2pm on Fri, and in the Champagny sector some nice powder was building up by the time we finished at 4.30pm. It continued to snow in Champagny till around midnight at least so I'm guessing those that got on the slopes on Saturday morning had a ball!!!

Still on the way back from the same fantastic week. Only downside was yesterday morning when we left after a bit of snow. Believe it or not we were in a slow queue most of the way down until the guy in the front (a french registered car) pulled off to the side. As we passed we realised he had done so to remove his chains. There must have been 50 vehicles behind him and no snow on the road since above the bobsleigh complex. Absolutely unbelievable and for once not a Brit to blame

Staying at the P&V Les Haut Bois - grateful for any opinions on whether I am best off renting from the Skiset in the P&V building (convenience) vs. the Intersport in the Galerie Commerciale (cheaper)?

yes, boarder by trade. I like a mixture really. Some cruising blues, challenging reds and the odd really tricky red/black. No moguls though
