I've used BA for my previous ski holidays, I was able to take my boots in hand luggage sized case at no extra cost. Using skyscanner to book a flight and the departing journey and returning journey are with different airlines, does anyone know if I'm able to take boots in the hand luggage at no extra cost with these 2 companies?

Is it advisable to book flights with different airlines so that the times suit me?

@NewSki, with Ryanair you can only take a small cabin case as hand luggage if you pay for priority boarding.

@queenie pretty please, i can get my boots, brace and mojo into my cabin bag on Ryanair. Unless someone has huge feet it should be possible to fit them in and the cost is reasonable for the benefit
@NewSki, flight times...yes why not? You have 2 separate journeys. The airlines don't care about the other part of your journey. I think the only time it's an issue is if you book both legs with a non budget airline...e.g. BA....if you don't take the outward flight they might cancel the return...that might have changed now.

@holidayloverxx, yes the cabin bag size if you pay for priority boarding is pretty generous. But if you don't pay for priority boarding the size is pretty small, I have got away with a small holdall for a weekend's trip to the UK, but there's no way ski boots would fit.

Easyjet don't care what you take in your hand-luggage as long as it meets their rules (size, banned items etc) so best to read them. On other threads that you can search for here, they seem ok with boots in hand-luggage but some airports’ security may have their own opinions. Perhaps mention where to/from you are flying from and you may get better answers
Don’t know about Ryanair as I don't use them.
Why wouldn’t you book with different airlines if their times suit? But again making sure you are familiar with their rules (re bags etc) as they can differ so one thing will apply one way maybe not the other. .

This is what I'm worried about

Then first read their rules, you can always use their chat to confirm, if any specifics remain like which UK airport might have an issue that the airlines dont control then say which you are heading from and coming back to (might be different if you are using different airlines) but I'l say thayt Gatwick and Heathrow dont mind boots in hand luggage.

@NewSki, make sure your cabin baggage is the right size for whichever has the smaller dimensions and that you have priority for Ryanair. It's not an issue

@NewSki, further to @ster's comment about airports...you will have no issue wirh Salzburg. One of the French airports doesn't allow ski boots in hand luggage...chambery? Grenoble? But Salzburg, Ryanair and easyjet have no such restrictions. No issues at heathrow, Gatwick, Luton or Stansted. Don't know about any others

If you have air miles to burn on BA. Go to Munich and get the train to Salzburg

@GlasgowCyclops, much as I bow to your knowledge of air travel....no. it will take an age as they then need a transfer to Maria alm which will be more convenient from Salzburg airport.

I have flown from Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Stanstead & Birimgham in the UK, Geneva, Grenoble, Turin, Innsbruck & Salzburg on return and have never had a problem with ski boots in my hand luggage.

@NewSki, you will be booking two one way tickets, the issue is if you book a return on any airline and don’t use the first leg.
As others have stated ski boots aren’t an issue at Salzburg, check each airlines cabin bag dimensions.

Is there a particular reason you want to have your boots in hand baggage? I presume you're not going skiing with "only" your boots, so you must have a checked bag also... why not just put your boots in the hold luggage?

@Mac Pie, this has been done to death. People like to have their ski boots in hand luggage in case the hold luggage goes missing. You pay hundreds of pounds for your own boots, which have probably been fitted - if they go missing you are stuck with rentals till they turn up.

yes but if you do go priority you can bring on a cabin bag that fits ski boots, and a small bag, ie satchel, large handbag, small backpack. I bring my boots on board all the time.

Ah, okay, understood. However, if my hold luggage went missing I doubt I'd be skiing until I got it back anyway... and hold luggage rarely goes missing "forever".
Anyway, each to their own, and thanks for clarifying. Obviously it's been a much-discussed topic...

@Mac Pie, yeah...there have been reports of luggage going missing for several days. If my hold luggage went missing I would buy a cheap pair of ski pants and go skiing

Yes true, but it is usually 9 euro or so, or check it in at 10 euro.

Did someone piddle in your cornflakes holidaylover? I was just saying in case he thought it was one bag even in priority that paying the 9 euro allows for a bag that is big enough to fit his boots, while not paying doesn't allow a bag that big.
|

@biddpyat, 9 euro does pay for a cabin bag big enough to fit (my) boots. Not paying doesn't allow a bag that big. I'm still not sure what you are trying to get across - sorry.
Pay for priority = a cabin bag big enough for boots (10kg) + a small handbag
Don't pay for priority = a small hand bag only
10kg Check-in Bag = Non-priority customers who wish to bring a wheelie bag (10kg weight) can buy a 10kg check in bag when booking, or at the airport but doing it at the airport costs more than booking priority. Priority customers, who already get a 10kg cabin bag included, can add a second 10kg bag this way.

@holidayloverxx, must admit im more worried about the plane crashing when flying, so the boots are irrelevant. But thats my problem.
