@zzz, we woke up on Tuesday feeling very optimistic seeing some powder on the balcony after 2.5 days of rain. We started wondering on the lift ride up why there were an unusual large number on intermediate skiers on the mountain. We discovered very quickly that the pistes were frozen solid with a misleading coating of powder and made almost everyone ski ugly - especially given my choice of 96mm skis for the ‘powder day’ that never was.

2.5 days of rain? Monday was mostly dry, ending in glorious sunshine in LG, have the video. Bailed out of Avoriaz at 3pm as it was still a little murky.
And I’ll never understand why people complain about 20cm powder and then the sun coming out.....I thought Wednesday was lovely, even on an old board with blunt edges. Firm pistes with a fresh covering and rideable off piste with some scratching below. Guess everyone’s expectations are different, I start with the assumption that skiing every week at 1200m won’t last forever, so when it snows that low just enjoy it, even when a little challenging.
Anyway next week should deliver enough snow to keep everyone happy....but there will also be intermittent rain lower down and strong winds up high. But the end result will be some riding in deep fresh snow.

You are right Monday was drier but we were morally drenched! There was much less than 20cm on Tuesday which was getting blown around. Issue is the hard plate ice underneath which was hard to read. Sadly we were not there on Wednesday but will be back on Friday.

Next week will be amazing by the looks of things, tues-friday....but a lot of variation still in the models and some going for a warm up at the weekend (ECM dry, GFS wet)
Could lead to more gallic shrugging. This at the top of Chamossiere around 4pm last Monday

@Mother hucker, there is lots of snow above 1500m which has been well consolidated by the rain etc. I don’t think there will be an issue unless there is a major foehn event or long warm spell. We will probably see a few more medium/big snow events and snow making to keep things ticking along. We are there for 2 weeks at Easter and not worried - yet. |
im there for 2 weeks at Easter also. Ive not been out since the start of Jan so have no real idea whats happening.

Last year we skied Chatel and Avoriaz to 21 April which was Easter Sunday. The season closed on Monday 22. Typical spring skiing conditions with wet fun snow and able to ski down to PLJ at 1200m. Was sunny and not a lot of brown snow to be found. PLJ and Linga are largely north facing and retain their snow very well.

Very high winds, rain and 10c + today in Morzine. Currently 9c in town. Avoriaz was shut. All non-pisted slopes below Pleney have lost the snow cover. Not looking encouraging for next 10 days, but things change.

@Mother hucker, yes you can ski down both, with a few patches of brown but it's going to be icy as huck once it stops raining and cools down. Unless the snow line drops of course.

On a general note, the skiing in November, December, and even January (wall to wall sun mostly) was first rate. Since then it seems to have gone a bit Pete Tong.

Still 7C at 1100m in Morzine. But the wind has dropped after a windy night so less damage being done. No snow overnight visible from here. Possibly at the very top of Avoriaz. We're finally getting home tomorrow after being 'stranded' since Sunday.

We're about to get dusted again....looks heavier further north across Jura.
Thursday evening still best chance for a really good dusting, then Friday fresh tracks, a dryish and sunny weekend, before more drama early next week

The forecast that promised much at the weekend has thus far delivered nothing.
February is looking ugly. Still time for it to change but it is starting to look like one of those seasons. I’m putting the the gear away for now and will let the punters fight it out over the strips of ice

been snowing lightly in LG town for an hour....and it's only Tuesday lunch time....am waiting until Friday before throwing my snowboard out of the pram and onto the slopes
about 3 months left of this season, just wait til the vortex goes into hibernation in spring and all that record cold air spills out into europe

looks like it hasn’t really delivered too much, yet again. Most of the precipitation was of the liquid variety and when the warm front passed and it became cold enough, it was dry.

story of the season....great early start and run up to xmas, a dry and sunny few weeks in early Jan, some decent powder days, then recently some rain-snow events lower down, but the base above 1300-1400m is fully in tact, and will last until April. A few top ups this week, more next week.....what's not to like?
Fresh tracks this morning in Avoriaz

Don’t panic folks. I skied Braitaz, Torgon and a bit of Super Chatel today. Get out early, keep high and if possible keep North facing and the snow is fine.
