As we have a BA reward voucher that annoyingly runs out shortly after, we either go then or waste it, so we may as well give it a go...but it will be 3 of us including a 5 year old.
It will be more of a winter holiday with a few lessons thrown in, in the morning so we need somewhere where the nursery slopes are likely to be open and other than that so long as there's a few easy blues that will be fine.
Where is our best bet (appreciating October will always be hit and miss)?

@vjmehra, October means glaciers. Sölden, Hintertux, Kitzsteinhorn are likely to be open to some degree, but lessons and extent of available skiing depends on the conditions.

Oh yeah the glacier bit isn’t a problem, I’d assumed that would be the case. It’s really more whether anywhere is likely to offer kids lessons then (conditions permitting). Or whether the ski schools just don’t open up until the season really starts (I’ve never been that early before so absolutely no idea)!

October is not likely to be a winter holiday in the alps. Last year warm sunny weather lasted almost until the end of the month (not an unusual occurrence), much more walking and cycling than anything to do with snow. The glaciers will be open but how much skiing they will be able to offer is really down to chance. Not sure it is really worth the effort of getting up to the glacier for a couple of hours on a nursery slope. You might be better off saving your money for a "proper" winter holiday. Use your BA vouchers for a different type of holiday, as mentioned Austria can be a great place for a summer holiday too.

We (me and 6 year old) went to hintertux last october 1/2 term. The ski school was open, and kiddo ended up in private lessons for the price of group due to lack of children. The conditions were very icy by noon, so we did other things in Mayrhofen in the afternoon. It's got a great swimming pool and playground. There was enough (very icy!) terrain to keep an upper intermediate busy for 1/2 a day, but only one small makeshift nursery slope for beginners. The beginners had to be carried to the slope on a snow cat which probably was fun, but everything looked very limited for them. I'd probably wait and see what conditions are like before going again.
On the upside there's plenty else to do, and beautiful cities to visit if the skiing is bad.

Thanks for the advice everyone...I think we may head further south for a bit of last minute sun instead and wait a few more months for snow!

@vjmehra, do you wnat to ski or enjoy an overall relaxing mountain experience. If the latter head to a Alpine valley in the Austrian alps and enjoy walking, biking and other activities. The colours are magnificent in autumn and the sun still feels warm - villages and roads are quiet and prices are grea value as mostly catering for locals.

Generally take what @Whitegold, says with a large pinch of salt. The glaciers at Zermatt are not likely to be any better or worse than the Austrian ones. The scenery is more spectacular and the mountains are higher but not sure the skiing is better at all. Because of its height the glacier area at Zermatt is more prone to bad weather and high winds. It is a lovely though expensive place.

Zermatt is the last remaining Alps glacier that guarantees 365 days of skiing per year.

In the Tyrol, July and August can be very wet, although there are some marvellous storms to watch about tea time, but by Sept/Oct the weather often calms down and cycling is lovely.
