In general.
It was investing in a couple of fledgling companies, ARM and NOKIA. Then buying Bitcoins years ago. Then getting £800k from the lottery. Then becoming a world expert on everything.
Oh no.....!!!!! Hold on. poo-poo...... I discovered the internet in 1994 (thank you Mosaic and Gopher) and realised you could lie all the time on a computer and people will take what you write seriously.... Or seriously enough to argue with you for page after page after page

Snowheads.
Decently fitted stiff boots, and later foam liners.
Sking full seasons in Austria.
Bent Chetler fat skis for powder and pretty much everything else off piste.
Softer freeride boots for off piste.
FIS race skis in SL and GS to discover what real technique is.

do you mean working part time on a ramp down into retirement? "hybrid lifestyle" is a new term for me.

in response to the original question I can't point to any one thing but:
1. a school ski trip to Voss when I was twelve. Loved it and knew I wanted to do more even if there was only money for one more trip in my teens.
2. a brilliant outdoor education teacher at my comp who took us hiking, climbing, kayaking, bivvying in december, on expedition to the Pyrennees mountaineering - loads of stuff Health and Safety tends to block these days. Got a love of the mountains that has stayed with me.
3. skiing with a mate at University who had done a lot of skiing and could explain what was going on (we were both studying engineering) - made massive improvements in three weeks following him and chatting on lifts. We've only missed one year skiing together in 29 years
4. season after university in Courchevel when I worked really hard on my skiing
5. First pair of "shaped skis" Atomic R22
6. Toured Grand Paradiso about ten years ago reconnecting skiing and mountaineering
7. Having kids, skiing with them, realising they can be better than me if they want to be, then seeing that they WILL be because they love it so much - the best
8. Buying a place in the Alps - a dream since University that hasn't disappointed in reality

he seems to have forgotten me as I rank below his foam liners, stiff boots, Bent Chetlers and race skis

I was about to upbraid him on that very omission. Dead man walking, I guess...

Yep or portfolio life where one of the buckets in your portfolio is skiing rather than another job. I was thinking particularly of people like @scarpa who effectively bums all winter then comes back to the UK to bank some filthy lucre in the summer though I don't know if that is still his plan this year.
Edit: based on the above he might well be residing in a large UK located kennel this summer

@Kooky, Sorry, I was keeping it to my top 8.
@Hurtle, She actually holds me back due to the compulsary huge amounts of beer and schnapps consumed on our ski days.

The whole family of 2 sons, hubby and I learnt to ski on the plastic slope in Edinburgh (Hillend) in 1983. By 1988 we had progressed to skiing on snow in Scotland several times. For Easter 1988 we booked what was meant to be a one-off ski trip to Flaine. Well it did change our lives... We went out with the ski rep who commented that our sons were quite good skiers and could become instructors when they grew up. We said no they are going to university and will have 'proper jobs'. So they went to uni and both have degrees which have not been used. They both competed in FIS world cup events, one in snowboard and the other in mogul skiing. One is still instructing in France each winter, the other has retired from instructing now but did it for many seasons. Mr mogul ski and I retired from international freestyle ski judging last year. Flaine has a lot to answer for but I wouldn't change it for the world. That holiday opened up things I never ever dreamt I would do!

Aha yes.
I've thought about these kind of balances but the challenge for me is that I can earn a lot more (per day) working full time than I could with that kind of portfolio. The logical conclusion of that is carry on working FT longer but retire earlier but I actually think a portfolio approach may be a better way (psychologically, emotionally) of moving into retirement...

For skiing; the day my travel agent faxed back (circa 1998) with “I can do you 7 nights in France for £750, or 10 nights in Canada for £600.”
A whole world opened up that didn’t involve thinking that skiing on patchy ice, or ESF group “lessons “, were the best I’d ever get in life.
