Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A bit of positivity. Was going to ask based on another thread what skis changed your (skiing or whole) life but then realised it was a wider topic?

What equipment, experiences, tips, holidays, gadgets, inspirational porn, people you met changed your skiing, boarding or actual life?

NB cards against humanity style answers also welcome.

For me getting kneebindings.

Having ruptured my ACL skiing, had it reconstructed and then damaged that while playing hockey, those bindings have helped with my head demons in being worried over falling over.

Becoming friends with a British ski instructor one summer on a field trip to Etna, who invited me to stay with him for a cheap holiday that winter. I didn't know he was the Chairman of BASI until much later, and he set me on a path which eventually leads to today.

My ski related answer would be joining snowHeads (a forum for ski and snowboard enthusiasts for anyone not aware of it).

Up until then I was quite happy as a one week a year intermidiot.

My wife and family buying me a tank driving experience day for my 40th. To this day I have no idea why, as I'm not the least bit interested in tanks. I (eventually) swapped it for beginner ski lessons, and the rest is history. The house is rapidly filling with Skis etc, but at least we don't have a tank on the drive.

Edit: I should really mention the two Snowheads who persuaded me (although quite easily it must be said) to go on a Bash. - @neddyskigoon and @snoodlesMcFlude. A big thanks to both. So you see @neddy, you have no-one to blame but yourself really. Razz Toofy Grin Laughing

Brexit. I considered the industry that I work in, the lifestyle that I had, and things I wanted to do with my life, and figured that it wasn’t going to end well, so I sold my house, packed up, and got on a plane.

Got to say, the weather’s better, the scenery’s not too shabby, and the skiing is still available wink

and passing the baton, for me, talking to rob@rar about how I was "bored" with piste skiing and worried about pushing it too much off piste and getting into danger led me down the BASI path and I really enjoy piste skiing so much more now.

Conquering my fear of flying - opened up foreign travel to me and led to a career change.

Skiing: Renting an apartment in Val Thorens from a fellow snowHead for a season while having a midlife crisis, leading to regular seasons upon retirement.

Going from old style 165s at age 11 to (still old style) 190s age 12. Hating them, being unable to be in control of them, terrified of scratching them, switching back to my 165s in the afternoons when my legs tired to feel better about myself.

But that one day when it clicked.... Yeah, that day.

Finding snowheads was fantastic for my winter holiday enjoyment.

In more recent times: getting a new hip and buying a snazzy electric mountain bike. We have little group, they are all now wonderful friends and we have what seems like summer ski holidays, but on bikes.

Two things off the top of my head..

1) renting boots from the ski field which were miles too big, causing me to miss a beginner group lesson i'd booked. i'd only skied two or three times before and this was going to be my second group lesson. because i was renting from the mountain they fixed me up with better fitting boots (i'd been put in a 25.5 or 26.5... i now wear a 22.5 Shocked ) and in compensation for my missed group lesson, they fixed me up with a private lesson. LIFE CHANGING as the instructor pushed me much harder, improved my turning hugely, ditched the beginner area quickly and made me go down blue runs i didn't think i had the ability to handle ... that private lesson gave me so much more confidence and made skiing so much more fun. i immediately bought my own boots after that day though NehNeh

2) going through a shitty break up at the same time as a couple of my good friends moved away - freed me up to make a change in my life that I'd been thinking of doing for a while, and move cities so i am now 1.5 hours from a ski field (with a further 10+ ski areas/club fields within 2-4 hours) instead of 4.5 hours to two or three fields!

Silly fat skis. I had always eschewed these, mocked them even, until I was persuaded to try some by a mate one morning. Absolutely loved them, old GS planks in the bin, all-mountain skis are really good.

@Meltus, bravo!

I would concur that creating a lifestyle where one is not limited to the confines of one week or even two or three week-long holidays is the game changer!

We started off with four weeks and found we could manage work remotely, or if the OH had a major job, she'd fly back, four went to five which went to six and then we bought and do the season as well as 70% of the rest of the year as we rent out a house in the UK.

However, I totally understand that for many it is simply not feasible, though I'm always amazed at how young families do it and you see the kids enjoying the lifestyle.

I guess 2 things for me

Signing up for dryslope snowboard lessons
and
Buying my first "fat" (now quite skinny skis)

The first reignited a love for snowsports and led to much diversion of time to it in my life
The second taught me that I could do on skis exactly what I could do on a snowboard

Skiing wise working with someone who was into skiing and was going to be going by themself - gave me the perfect excuse to try it.

My parents moving from a council house/estate and buying a nice semi in a nicer part of the city was a life changer.

As stupid as it sounds, the internet.

When I was younger I had to either go to the travel agent or skim through teletext making endless calls to firms to go on holiday.

Now with a few dabs on my phone I'm half way across Europe for less than it costs to get to Manchester in a taxi.

My brother wanted me to go on a group skiing holiday with his mates. I thought it was a crap idea, going on holiday as a Brit meant getting drunk and sunburnt in the sun. I eventually said yes and it opened me up to skiing, Austria, Apres ski and germknödels

First pair of fitted ski boots

Emigrating to Austria

First set of tech bindings on touring skis

First day offpiste in St Anton with a guide.

T'was the financial crisis in 2008 that was the trigger for me. Up until then I'd worked for years for a fantastic commercial fit-out company and dicked around with skis and tuning equipment for the locals and a few snowheads as a fun hobby. My companies biggest client was RBS and its second biggest was HBOS so my world soon came crashing down. So I went to work for a local fit-out company for a few years and concentrated on growing the ski stuff to the point that I purchased commercial premises in 2011 and ditched my job in April 2012 to work full time (well 6/7 months of the year Cool) at The Piste Office. That was 7 years ago and the time has flown by.

On a more direct skiing front:
- the Warren Smith Academy
- properly fitted & aligned boots (props first to Bud Heishman in Reno and then our very own CEM)
- the development over the last 10 years in freeride touring botts, skis & bindings

@spyderjon, Are these Touring Botts you speak of widely available? I assume they come fully equipped with Instagram linked 360 cameras so that I can sit in the bar and boast about all the vertical I got without having to put in the effort?

Ski-life changer for me was def Snowheads, and all the info available here. And also being introduced to UCPA by a friend, and discovering guided off piste with them.

I was gonna say for skiing life changer it was getting proper boot fit, lessons, bashes, etc. which ultimately leads to sH.

But I'll go 1 step further back and say that it all stems from the uk.rec.skiing newsgroup, since it was there that a sH posted where everyone had gone to in sH week #1.

If it weren't for uk.rec.skiing, I'd probably still be self-taught skiing like sitting on the karzee (sp?), with thighs burning hotter than the Sun, in boots 3 sizes too large, ...

For non skiing? dunno. Probably going ahead with the "grass is always greener else where" theory, and finding out that yes it is.

That's where I found out about snowHeads, when I posted a question about Les Arcs and was directed here. Prior to that I had no idea of snowHeads or the by then closed SCGB forum. The question about childcare facilities in Les Arcs was my last ever post on newsgroups.

Hi all,

I really fancy a late week now the conditions are looking up. I've never skied France before so would appreciate any thoughts:

1. How likely is it that conditions will hold up in these high resorts?

2. Which resort would be best to avoid afternoon slush?

3. If afternoon slush is unavoidable which is best for sitting in lovely sunshine with a beer? "

The dirt-cheap (something like £90 for seven hours' tuition) Learn to Ski package at Gloucester dry slope - at that price, why not give it a try?

That fortuitous conjunction of royal wedding + Easter bank holidays in 2011 allowing an extra week away.

The EoSB being in that week.

These three things have ended up costing many, many thousands of pounds... Laughing
