My daughter did a snowboarding taster session at Snowtrax today and loved it and wants to have more lessons.

Only issue is she is between shoes sizes (this seems to be a story of our lives!). The U.K. 5 was very cramped for her and her toes were scrunched up by it, but the U.K. 6 is huge on her and even tightened as much as possible it was so loose she could pull her foot straight out.

With skiing obviously tighter is better, my assumption is same for snowboarding - is that the right call?

Footbed might shorten the foot a bit, but yeah you want them tight enough to leverage control properly. Squished toes for an odd lesson probably isn't a disaster - wear really thin socks?

Hand shake firm fit is good ....generally entry boots and hire boots are high volume so they fit the majority of punters.

Sometimes kids and adults put the foot forward in the boot and then the heel isnt pushed hard or correctly into the heel pocket... so this then can give toe crush or discomfort.
Getting the "ankles flexed" in the boots and then not crushing the outer boot toe area when tightening the toe strap can be another point .

With the Ankles flexed ie. lower leg flexed forward ....standing in the boots an bindings... this will bring the toes back a tiny amount that varies person to person but its noticable.
Often entry riders have knees and ankles locked stiff doing the exact opposite and also when putting boots on as above .

In snowboarding and surfing ankle flexion is a key factor
Anyone can bend at the knees its the ankle joint and/or lower leg flexion that is very important.
When the boot is oversized or ill fitting this is compromised .

@Tirol 164, thanks, useful info. May have been tempted if we were closer to you, although we are Hampshire we are pretty much furthest you can get from London and still be Hampshire Happy

new boots will usually pack out one whole size
also boot sizes between manufacturer vary greatly. In my experience, salomon run small.
The UK conversion is not good idea to use. You would be better off printing off a sheet of A4 with shoe sizes on & have an idea of Mondo, US, EU, UK, etc. as some of the US sizes are between UK size & they either badge it to the equivalent a size up or down.

For hire ask to try the same size again but in a different boot.

@Mr.Egg, thanks will do. They only have the one manufacturer / style boots at the dry ski slope, but didn’t think that some may be more worn that others hence making that worth it.

Toes should just be touching the end of the boot, when out of the bindings, but this will give a short usability period for a young learner. Could you pack the rental liners with something to reduce the size?

The Burton lace ups should allow quite a range of sizing.

As above, it's all about ankle flex. You should be flexing your shins against the front of the boot with a flat foot, rather than trying to stand on tip toes. This will release huge amounts of reserve control, when on toe side.

She had her second lesson today and they do have a different make (Salomon vs the Burton she used before) in Size 5. This fit her much better so she was much happier today. Thanks for the tip. They don’t have many so could have been it wasn’t available last time?
