Just been on snow forecast (5 sleeps to go) and noted winds are anywhere from "15", "20" to "30". What does this actually mean in terms of
is it bloody cold?
will it force lifts to shut?
is it dangerous?

Depending on where you are going. I can't imagine it being (very) cold anywhere at the moment. The temps are really high here. Lift closure depends on where you are going. However usually I would expect it to be a lot higher than 30km/hr (at the top) before they would close anything. Dangerous ? How?

Is that km/h or mph? 20km/h is a light wind but maybe a bit chilly from the north east, chairlifts shut at 60km/h and DMC cable cars can operate to the 100-120km/h range. 20-80km/h will move snow to lee slopes, faster and the snow becomes airborn.

Thanks to you both. I think its km/hr. It is for Obergurgl which by all accounts is not that well protected in terms of trees.
Is this dangerous in terms of avalanches, is what I meant.

It may depend on the chair. Where we are, some lifts seem to have lower wind safety tolerance than others - our local one shuts even when it doesn't seem very windy, and the reason given is "trop du vent au sommet" even when other lifts are going up to the same summit and it's OK to ski even for ordinary mortals, like me, not just the mountain specialists. They certainly shut some other lifts here when the wind is blowing less than 60 kph (which I think is around gale force?). I imagine that places with lots of very modern high tech lifts can keep them open in windier conditions. Some of ours are a little ancient (like the ski suits).

pam w, it depends on wind direction as well. Also, some chairs can be slowed down to keep running in high winds.
