Poster: A snowHead

A report in today's Sunday Times paints a bleak picture of snowsports awatreness of the dangers of off-piste and worse still of how to use the expensive equipment that they buy.
At the moment there have been 53 confirmed deaths in the French Alps and the total for the whole Alps is approx 100 to date, the worst figure in 35 years.

Yep the video shows the guy triggered off the avalanche as a big slab of snow cracked up when he was on it. The incredible thing is among the cloud and confusion of snow the guy was seen skiing out of it. They were doing an annual event in Monte Rosa apparently and that is why the cameras werte ready. The event organiser has already blasted the loose snow away before starting the event.

Wow. Very lucky indeed. Not detracting from his skiing but I think he was just very, very lucky.
"Yeah yeah it's safe I let off a loud bang earlier..."

hibernia, I was talking to one of the Les Arcs mountain rescue gendarmes about this. Without detailing a specific incident, all the papers often discuss is the lack or otherwise of equipment, an arva etc. However in a fair few cases the bodies are so mangled up and torn apart that an arva would make no difference at all. He was saying that people might take a little more care if they could see some of the sights he has seen, if the media would mention the true extent of injuries...
