Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

File angles for K2

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
After the advive recieved in earlier posts I have got the basic kit for servicing my skiis. The first thing I realise I don't know is what angle should the sides be filed at. I have both K2 Apache's and older Salomon 1080's.

Any help ratefully recieved

justapurrin, K2 Apache factory specs are 0.5 to 1 degree base & 2 degree side angle.

Salomon factory specs are a little more imprecise in that the techies manual states both the base & side angles can vary from 1 to 1.5 degrees. A great help eh?

What angle file guides do you have?

Best to put some marked pen across a section of edge & do a bit of gentle fine stoning with your file guide. What you're looking for is to remove the marked pen equally right across the edge indicating that the guide's angle matches that of the ski. If you remove just the outer or inner portion of the marker pen then your file angle is either steeper or shallower than the ski's actual edge angle.

It's worth testing the angles at interals along the base as factory settings can be inconsistent along the length of the ski.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

justapurrin, I don't think it matters what the manufacturers put on them.

But a 1* base and 2* side works fine for me on all the skis I've tried it on.

When my current side bevel guide wears out, I think I'll try a 3*.

I find that a full service is about €24 myself. What angle does that translate into?
