Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi Folks. I've just changed my car, and of course the old chains don't fit. Never used, apart from the obligatory test session on the UK driveway.
Seeing as they cost nearly £300 (Thule K Summits) I'm thinking of either trying to sell them or maybe hang on to them in case they do fit a future car. What sort of prices have people got for their 2nd hand (but never used) chains?
Thanks!

@davidof, And here's me thinking that with a couple of extra shrinking bolts I can actually get them to fit the new 245 /45 /18s!

@Matt1959, it's the postage which can kill the deal ... I have given away chains to people in the need since posting them is punitive - but what size are they? if they are an unusual size then they tend to be more sought-after....

I've sold 2 sets on here, a fairly standard set, and a set of Maggi Traks. I've also bought some Thule ones that fitted both the campervan and our Xtrail. Postage wasn't ridiculous. You should get a reasonable amount for those.

I ended up with 4 sets of varying sizes due to company cars, ended up selling them at the local metals recycling centre

In 15 full seasons in Cham, Verbier, and Aosta I’ve never needed my chains, I’ve stopped carrying them now. I do have snow tyres and 4x4.
I’m sure someone will give you a hundred quid for them.

I think I have 4 sets, fancy spikes spyders down to simple chains. All different sizes, none of course ever used in anger. Next year I shall take the same set again as we have same car. Please snow so I can use!!

I have sold 3 sets in the past 2 on ebay 1 here, generally get about half new retail price but it does depend on timing, November and January have been good months for me.
snowchains.co.uk run a trade in service for some of the brands they sell.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Sell them on ebay. Always buy mine from there. They will give a guide price and you can always specify pick up only if you dont want to post. As @Timc, says timing is important to get the best price.

Thanks for that, Timc. I've also just changed cars and needed to get new chains and had forgotten the part exchange deal they did.

You know it makes sense.

Anyone looking for new snowchains may want to have a look at my post in the 'Bargains' thread - some very good prices on Spikes Spider chains on Amazon and you shouldn't need to sell them when you change your car as they can be resized.
