Poster: A snowHead
|
Having driven this season for the first time, looks like this is the way forward for our family as the cost savings (and carbon footprint as I checked out!) against flying make sense. I want to crack on and start looking at costs for next half term but they aren't open yet - Eurotunnel FAQ's say 9-11 months in advance which is kind of now but wondering if anyone has any more experience as to when Feb half term generally becomes available? Thanks!

@always29, I normally book in August, but I think the dates are released sometime around July. There doesn't seem to be any appreciable hike in prices with Eurotunnel, unlike the airlines, so while the popular times might work out to something like £75-90 each way and rise to about £120 as the crossing gets full, you won't see the £40 to £450 increases you would see for flights between quiet and peak times.
Plus if you have Tesco clubcard vouchers, they are exchanged at the rate of 3 to 1 at Eurotunnel so a crossing costing £150 can be paid with £50 of Tesco vouchers. We've only ever paid a few pounds here or there by card to cover the difference, as vouchers can only be exchanged in multiples of £5.

@ousekjarr, @terrygasson, thanks for your expertise! I'll see what I can sort about racking up some clubcard points in the meantime as we just don't use Tesco - might have to get one of their credit cards for spending at another supermarket (and everywhere else!).

We used to drive to Andorra every half term, 5 of us in a 7 seat MPV with a roof box.
The tunnel was always fully paid for with Tesco points and buying a year's supply of wine in France saved us enough to pay for the fuel

@always29, just to let you know, tunnel bookings are now open for feb 2020, just checked myself and my preferred crossings would cost me £162, at peak times with standard fare.

Thanks for the heads up, places now booked for Feb 1/2 term. I see Flexiplus has shot up a lot in price, I was considering it this time but am just going to slum it instead lol. I used to do Frequent traveller standard with 6 round trips per year. However, the driving just became a bit too much especially for May and October 1/2 term trips so we just fly those now, and thinking of flying for Christmas as well and swapping the Eurotunnel lottery for Air traffic control!

@terrygasson, you could research somewhere for us to go - just the family, we went to La Clusaz last HT and it suited us perfectly, am thinking Espave Diamant this time as it's not a mega drive, cheap lift tix, enough mileage to keep us busy and right mix of slopes for kids (8 & 10) esp if they continue learning to board (weeks 2 & 3) respectively but if the want to ski, ski school will show them fun stuff. Just need to find a nice 1 bed cabin type apartment for less than a gazillion euros.
