Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Distances between Val d'Isere centres

Looking for chalets in Val d'Isere for next season.
Loads of good stuff available (thanks to tips on here).
Have some friends who will be staying with Ski Esprit, in Val centre, near the Solaise lifts.
A lot of chalets offered for Val D are actually in Le Fornet, La Daille or Le Chatelard.
There is a free ski bus, but anyone have any idea of how easy it is to get from these other places to Val centre.
The only maps I have available have no proper scale on them.
Le Fornet looks quite a distance while La Daille seems close (though reported to be ugly as sin)
Thnx in advance Very Happy

VDI/Le Fornet and VDI/La Daille are probably about the same, I'd think. La Daille is indeed ugly, and there are some nice chalets in Le Fornet (Ski-Val, YSE, Finlays). Ski-Val have chalets around the centre of town/in Legettaz for 8 - 12 pax, several of them very close to the Solaise pistes.

I picked up a mention of Ski-Val on here somewhere this morning and they seem rather good. Any knowlede of the Chalet Hotel Chamois d'Or - seems budget, basic but good. Not on the ski Val town map, but all the info suggests it's central to Solaisse area

It's at the bottom of the Face, opposite the road up to Legettaz, and you can ski out from the back to the Olympic cablecar. Short walk to the Solaise lifts. Rooms are ensuite with modern decor (no brown carpet on the walls), bar/restaurant/lounge downstairs. Basic but good would probably be a reasonable description.

la Daille and le fornet to VDI center are about 30 minutes walk. the footpath is good to la Daille. Ski buses are every 10 minutes after 8.30, a bit rarer before. Main problem with la Daille is no sun in the winter so it is very chilly - in VdI you can go on your balcony when it is sunny and you are not skiing. Free parking at la Daille but not in VdI center (best to park indoors in the winter anyway).

La Daille is OK if you're not bothered about nightlife or if you're with a big bunch of mates and you think you can keep yourselves entertained. It has the advantage of being right at the bottom of the Funival train for quick access to Tignes and the top of the "OK" and "Orange" runs which are awesome especially later in the day (can be icy first thing) and you can sit and drink and listen to outdoor DJ's at the Follie Douce on the way down to La Daille from about 3.45pm. Le Fornet is a bit further away in the other direction and slightly uphill. It's the wrong side of Val d'Isere if you want to ski over in Tignes (which most people will) However it is excellent for tree sking after a huge dump, and better in bad light. It has access to the Solaise area which is good for beginners but otherwise kind of dull and kind of crappy on the way down. Either way the buses are really regular until about 12.00 or 1am, and you can get a taxi if you miss the last one. Mind you you'll need to sell a kidney to afford it. You wouldn't want to walk home after a night out in town unless you've really got your beer coat on.

One last thing, recently discovered an awesome place to eat big buffet lunch, including starter, dessert, cheese, the full monty. Much better value than up the mountain. It's at the bottom of the Funival in La Daille. It used to be a creche, think it's called Tufs. You have to go to the upstairs bit.

PS I'd say you're better off in the centre if you can find a place there, then you can go either way and you're near all the shops etc. Chamois d'Or might be a better bet than a miging studio in La Daille

Bus timetable is here, or find it via the "Village" and "getting around" links on the Val d'Isere website.

The busses are reliable and fast. During the day they are so frequent that people just turn up and wait. Walking between Fornet-Centre and Centre-Dialle is possible and both can be nice walks. On the other hand walking can be prohibited due to snow conditions. During last week (4-11 March) so much snow fell that the road was closed to pedestrians - but you often get some fools who know better that the safety professionals!

Look at Le Ski - 3 good, nicely furnished chalets in a good position near town. Toofy Grin
