Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Steilhang, Perhaps not damaging the nature, more the remoteness and feel of the place. You hike up to the top of the valley and its so remote and beautiful summer and winter, imo the last thing needed when you've walked for 2-3 hours is folks swinging around above your head in a glass bottomed gondola. Same can be said I guess regards Vallugabahn but that is very different terrain and not same sort of remoteness. Anyway hope it'll not happen, and even if it did it'd be years in the courts i'd think even before it'd get to be planned/ built Very Happy

@stanton, yeah, right. I can hardly see Kappl being in a position to finance a tunnel from Kappl to St.Anton.

Given that the Green party is now likely to be part of the Federal government as well as it existing position in Tirol there is much less likelihood of any ski related developments being approved. Perhaps the Gemeinde in Kappl has enough influence in Innsbruck to persuade the authorities there but it seems unlikely. I suspect Kappl will go the way of Pettneu and simply become a satellite of Ischgl.

Its a pity this will not happen in some form. The real issue is where the link would on-board. If it on boarded where the current riffel II ends
then it will really not encourage more people into the malfon due to the considerable hike needed. obviously if riffel is also upgraded and goes to the top
of the malfon to meet the new link then this may be different. And, the top of kappl give easy access to the malfon as it is, but is not used, as the round trip for the
kappl people to return to is too great.

If the link happened with a fast and frequent bus link from kappl to ischgl, then there would be a significant pull on tourists to do this
rather than the weisse ring(which is way to busy currently), when the weather does not allow easy touring or off piste!

also there is a very big difference between visual impact and environmental impact. I think these bubbles are quite low on both criteria.

@mcg, the concept of linking the Arlberg to Ischgl is no more than a wet dream for the tourist offices. What's the point of spending so much time in gondolas or on buses, there is not even a remote possibility of being able to actually ski between the two areas (unless you are a super fit ski tourer and even then its unlikely)? The only folk likely to benefit would be the local taxi drivers who would be charging serious amount of money ferrying folk between the Stanzertal and Paznauntal after the lifts close. There was (is) a case to be made for linking the Rendl and Kappl areas mainly to the benefit of Kappl whether anyone can come up with a scheme that makes sense financially and environmentally remains to be seen.

Maybe, and BTW its just a taxi to landeck and the train to st anton,(or vice versa) if money is an issue. plenty of busses up the paznauntal also.

Point is, st anton is bursting at the seems, and needs to expand.

How do you solve that one. shoot the tourists. that's killing the proverbial goose and all that.

@stanton, Get a grip mate. People like to get a feeling of moving around the alps when skiing - surprisingly many really enjoy it! Besides which you would not spend any more time on lifts doing that than staying local. Every up has an equal amount of down - simple physics! Buses and trains though is a different matter....you can do that before the lifts even open and come back after they shut, so no real loss there.

@mcg, the chances of any significant expansion of the skiing area are small probably non existent. There is some discussion over turning the current off piste route / forest tracks between St Christoph and St Anton into a piste (it was an official ski route years ago) but it is clear there is significant opposition as well as support from the lift company / tourist office. Other than that the link to Kappl might still happen but not sure that will add any more "skiing capacity" to St Anton. Best policy is to avoid peak skiing weeks. Stopping further hotel development might help but that is very unlikely, too much money to be made.

In my experience the bus service in the Paznauntal is pretty slow the Stanzertal seems quicker but would not want to be using either for regular trips between Ischgl and St Anton

Then come to North America! One has to stretch the definition of "linkage" to find any such resorts over here (e.g., I don't think Altabird counts). Such linkage is one of the main reasons I come to the Arlberg. I like the pitch (and quick lunch capability) of St Anton, and the quiet of Lech. The Flexenbahn makes it feasible. I imagine you ski in that perfect terrain under it! I need to get a guide and ski it....

@stanton, had spotted that weather trend, not sure about meltdown but I guess most if not all of the valley snow will go. Hopefully the föhn will not be strong enough to melt snow higher up. At the moment it looks like a couple of weeks of quieter, milder, dry weather just as the season is due to start.

Memories! I remember a time, long ago, just after the dinosaurs disappeared, when the only lift up from Galzig was the Vallugabahn, the queues for which could be very long, maybe an hour, for an old slow cable car. To help skiers cope with that the lift operator started allocating Vallugabahn intendees with a queue number, you'd then be able to use that time to ski around on Galzig, which had p.a. loudspeakers on the pylons announcing numbers, those currently boarding and the next batch. Good system I thought at the time. If I remember rightly, Galzig in those days had just a couple of t-bars, one running along the present Osthang chair route, that t-bar maybe started a bit lower below the tree line. Happy days, as they say. Very Happy

Everyone is different, you complete muppet. If the resort is not going to choke itself then it needs to expand. the place is
bursting at the seams...……….or have you not noticed from the taxi cab. If st. anton wants to keep building high quality
accommodation and keep filling it, then it can't pretend to be an elite, off piste playground anymore.

Or maybe you want people to d a ski exam to be allowed into the resort......eh!!

What I said is that the weisse ring is too busy and other alternatives are needed for people who, for many reasons, do not
spend their whole time touring.

I agree with you in terms of hotel expansion etc. and the ski route from st. christoff really will only alleviate congestion in the happy valey etc. But
the fact remains that the place is over capacity as not everyone can head off touring, all day every day!

The infrastructure in both valleys would need to significantly improve for the link to happen and be successful, but if kappl needs the link so badly, then its
an investment that needs to happen. the simple fact is that st anton is far too busy, dangerously so, and something needs to happen.

@mcg, this debate has been had on here a number of times before. There is no "solution". One of the best ski areas around is naturally going to attract lots of people. Expansion is not an option (and just like building more roads more pistes = more people). Faster lifts means shorter queues but busier pistes. Peak weeks are going to be crowded, perhaps unpleasantly so. If you dont like the crowds either stick to ski touring or try smaller areas with less crowds.

Expensive Lift Systems/Snow Making - Expensive Lift Tickets

According to VKI, prices have increased significantly throughout Austria. Adult day tickets cost an average of 3.4 percent more than in the previous year. The six-day tickets were on average even more expensive by 3.9 percent.

@stanton, there seems to be general agreement that the lift systems in Austria are far more modern (whether that means better is a rather different subject) than elsewhere. That means spending money installing new lifts and that money comes from selling tickets, so it makes sense that the cost of lift tickets is increasing more than the cost of inflation. Given you are such a keen ski tourer I would have thought it makes no difference to you?

@stanton, it depends whose forecast you believe. Morris' algorithm suggests around 0.5m at the mid station over the next few days others not so much. It is due to get colder after the current mild spell with some snow from time to time but who knows how much. Hopefully enough snow so that a trip on weekend of 7th December is worthwhile.
