We all know that you shouldn’t store skis in a damp place, but what about heat? If you put the skis in the attic for the summer does the heat have an effect on the skis?
I’m assuming that the floor of the attic is heavily insulated and the roof itself isn’t, having been in our attic when its sunny and mid twenties (c) it’s significantly warmer up there, could it affect the ski construction?

@radar, I can’t imagine it gets hot enough otherwise it would be hot enough to damage your attic!

@radar, well there’s quite of lot of discussion of this and almost no decent research to use as a basis for judgement and decision. For years, people said that cycle helmets needed replacing every five years or so because the plasticisers in the foam would evaporate off and the plastic would go brittle. Only a careful research study showed that this wasn’t the case.
Here’s some of the ‘this is what you do’ - without any decent grounding in science: https://www.kulkea.com/how-to-store-ski-gear-off-season/
So.....
We know that UV is death to plastics. Avoid that absolutely.
Avoid high heat which causes plasticisers to evaporate. But that’s quite high heat.
Avoid damp. That will cause the edges to rust. Not a huge deal unless the oxidation is so great it causes things to blow apart.
We use: the garage, the shed, the boiler room, under the beds, the wardrobes, the attic, and propped in the hall.
All fine.

I fear some of us are a little precious about our kit ... but that’s OK I am at least a very lot precious about other things.
Just not skis or boots these days.
Colour coded Swiss made allen keys are an entirely different matter!

@radar, If the insulation is below the storage space, as it usually is, then the attic space is like an oven. Don't keep your skis up there and expect them to be the same. Don't store them anywhere damp either.
@valais2, Surely you have enough old skis lying around that you could sacrifice a few pairs to the attic/damp cellar just to see what happens to them? For science, obvs.

Mine live a papered life in the spare bedroom, regularly visited by a ski concierge to ensure they are comfortable and the boots aren't being a pain

@Scarlet, my thought was on how hot it gets up there, if its 25c outside and sunny could the attic be at 35 (that's just a guess), could that heat over a number of hours and days affect the structure

@radar, Yes, I'm pretty sure it could. I was having almost the same discussion with @spyderjon the other day, who has various stories about warped skis if you ask him. Leave a digital thermometer up there all summer if you're interested in how warm it gets.

@Scarlet, I've come across a few which got me thinking, glad I'm not alone, once the summer arrives I might just do that and report back.

Since a hotbox, used to help skis absorb wax goes up to 55c or thereabouts, I can't see how perhaps 35c in an attic is going to cause any harm?
(And yes, I have stored skis in the loft for several years without any ill effects)

On the grounds that ambient here relatively often gets to 35C in summer, and very, very many pairs of skis are in garages and attics and store rooms...
I cannot see it being an issue. At all.

@under a new name, I think that's generally the conclusion that is drawn everytime it is discussed here..which is loads

@holidayloverxx, hadn’t noticed it discussed previously, but after 15 years of SHs... one forgets, non?

I googled 'heat warp skis storage'
I got one case of skis warped after being left next to a radiator. Must have been running the system at 99.9c.
I googled 'thing stuck in left ear'
I got a great deal more.
