So....already had useful feedback here and it’s made me think hard about what exactly I am buying.
1 We need off piste - real off piste
2 Walking in the summer
3 Mountaineering all seasons
But also
4 DH mountain biking in the Alps
5 Road cycling in the Alps
I was about to press ‘yes’ to the expensive BMC insurance which covers 1 2 3 - but then it said that it precluded pipe, aerials etc - aaaargh, that means i have to ban the ValaisGrom from the park....and he spends ages in there. So does does anyone else have experience of exclusion of being in the park...? ValaisGrom2 is not a park rat but he does do quite a bit of boarder and ski cross and occasional half pipe nonsense....
And the DH insurance remains punitive......

Austrian Alpine Club for all except 5 (assuming you are not off to the greater ranges). "Normal" cycling should be covered by ordinary travel insurance.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I think Allianz annual AssurSport insurance would cover all of that. It's not holiday insurance though, so you would need that separately.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@valais2, with the requirement for 3 I think you are really choosing between the BMC or the AAC. Why not get the kiddies some separate insurance, perhaps carte neige?

On a quick look, Snowcard Extreme or Pro levels would cover park and freestyle, all MB, off piste, cycling and pretty serious mountaineering. Can't comment on price, but a quick input of someone over 55 with "family" was just over £500 (or £400 for a couple, before tinkering with the various cover amounts under the various optional sections.

@johnE, thanks John ... er the ValaisGrom2 comes with me...(pause for criticism...) ... at 13 he's aiming for his first 4000m peak (probably the Bishorn) - both he and ValaisGrom1 have been up to the Cabane de Bertol at 3111m. Bit of an epic that day, used everything in the small rack I was carrying as 'insurance'.
@Grizzler, ...SportsDirect made my eyes water - over 800 gbp - I will check out Snowcard. Useful...many thanks.

@valais2, apparently AssurSport is good upto 6000m, above that I think you really are looking at specialist mountaineering providers. Everything else on your list look good.

I think a lot of Brit 'holiday' insurance excludes the Parks. I think this may come of a bit of a surprise to many parents who don't read the small print. But as there are so many expensive claims in the park I can see why.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Just buying insurance for a trip and I agree I am surprised it was a thing. Thankfully we've been using MPI last few years. I guess it's one of the reasons it's so expensive.
Wondering though if there are claims being turned down on account of the accident being in a snow park....

By way where in MPI's policy documents does it say they cover snow parks, half pipes, etc?

You know it makes sense.
|
@Layne, If it does not specifically exclude half pipes, parks etc then surely they will be included in the cover as they form part of piste netwok in the resort and will be covered by carte neige

@johnE, carte neige is irrelevant in relation to travel insurance. It covers things that insurance sometimes excludes e.g. heli evac

@Layne, it doesn't, but they are not in the exclusions listed.
