Wondered if anyone has suggestions on ski holidays for family ( half term next year). I am currently looking at Monterosa ... but confused on which resort would be best and if lift pass covers whole area or just section, or La Thuille.
We would like to avoid half term crowds as far as possible ( considering we are going in this time) but also the weekend local skiers which we found the pistes much busier and crowded than during half term (Pila!!).
We only do piste skiing, prefer confidence building pistes and are quite happy with smallish area. We did Pila for 3 years which was perfect in size but we now need a change of scenery.
Flights are booked to Milan.
Oh and a good choice of reasonable cheap self catering, with a good ski shuttle bus close by or within a few mins walk to lifts.

@Hils68, I have skied in the Monterosa several times at half term, it was really quiet during the week but did get busier at the weekend.
Don't remember there being much self catering accomodation available but only looked for one trip.

@Hils68, Stayed in Gressoney Staffal three times, was looking for self catering in Champoluc but didn't do that trip.

@Hils68, Courmayeur can get hordes of half-term-Brit-kiddies with school ski specialist Interski using Courmayeur as their main base. Some really lovely skiing, great food on the mountain, chi-chi resort/town, and not withstanding the Bar Roma!
Champoluc is one end of Monterosa, more of a ski village, not a huge amount of apres, but pleasant and quiet. Gressoney is in the middle of Monterosa, good skiing in and out of Staffal, I found a bit soulless and out on a limb. Preferred Champoluc and the fact its at the end of the system is not an issue, however busy the resort I've never had queue problems.

Thank you. we do have to consider ski school and ensuring we aren't the other side of the valleys at pick up time. (Done that in Les Gets / Morzine!) How long does it take roughly for slow intermediates to get from champoluc to Alagna (do you have to do the black). Thank you.

You can avoid the blacks in both directions by taking the lifts down, but it does rather then become a bit of a lift fest.
I have no idea how long it takes slow anyones, but there's probably 2 hours of lifts involved? Stafal to Salati alone (well, a couple of weeks ago, out of season and we felt they were running slow) was 25-30 minutes...

@Hils68, having just come back from La Thuile, I can really recommend this accom. 5 min walk in the morning to the lifts (downhill), a bit longer in the evening as uphill!

I've also stayed in Champoluc over half term, it was very quiet. I've enjoyed both areas, the Monte Rosa area has longer runs in my opinion, but I really enjoying skiing La Thuile, with the advantage that if the weather was bad in La Thuile it was often good in La Rosiere and vice versa.

@kitenski, a tad expensive for me, might be ok for some though, I could stay 27 nights for that amount in the apartment we've stayed in the last 3 years, granted its a one bed but sleeps four and is beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean.

We were in Champoluc last month and the biggest issue was they only opened the link on 2 of the 6 days we were there due to strong winds. We were therefore limited to the Champoluc/Frachay ski area and even on the two days the link was opened they had the Orange lights flashing to advise you to return to your valley fairly early. If we had become stuck in Gressoney it would have been a very long and expensive taxi journey back.

Thank you ... I actually meant if we drop the kids off at ski school in the morning in Champiluc and have to collect them at midday ... we have a window of 2 hours - does this give us enough time to ski over to Staffal? Also if we all ski in the afternoon will we have enough time to ski over to perhaps the top of Alagna lift but skiing Gressiney side not actually over to Alagna??

@Hils68, ah. 2 hours to Stafal, no, probably not but a few runs round Champoluc & Frachey will occupy you.
4 hours to and from above Alagna ought to be do-able, but obvs I don't know how fast you ski...

FAQ
much of it is of limited quality/value. For a good number of years until recently we believe we were the only apartment offering wifi... 
I seem to have honed in on Champoluc but looking at self catering everywhere (on our meagre budget) is about 10 mins drive away. Now we are hiring a car but not sure we want to have to drive every day there and back ... does anyone have experience of the local ski bus shuttle? Is it regular, well used , free or does everyone's just prefer to drive?
