Hi All, we are hiring a van and driving from Milan to Livigno tomorrow afternoon. Do you have any tips on what route to take? I have heard some of the tunnels run in one direction only, in the afternoon they should be open towards Livigno. Many Thanks

Years ago (1996?) we drove To Madonna di C via Livignio to pick up some cheap ski gear en route - anyone remember Salomon Super Force 9 2S's 
Anyhow, IIRC on the Saturday we drove from London via Belgium/Luxembourg for the cheap fuel and then onto the German border just north of Basle and stayed in an Ibis/Etap there. Then on the Sunday we went from Basle to Livignio, arriving in time for Lunch.
The route we took involved Swiss Motorways (so Vignette), over the Fluela Pass (was -20 deg C, sheet ice and snow chains required from half way up to half way down). Then through a tunnel (Munt la Schera?) - which was one way for about an hour, then t'other way for the next hour. We had to wait an hour coz we'd just missed the turn around time. We finally got to Livignio at about 12:30 pm, to discover that all the ski shops were shut 12 till 2. By the time we'd bought what we wanted it was gone 4pm, and we still had another 4 hours to Madonna.
I don't remember there being any tunnels on the route between Livigno and Madonna? And on the way home we went the other way via Bolzano, Innsbruck, Munich, Stuttgart.

Pretty straightforward: take a road to Lecco-Sondrio-Tirano-Bormio-Livigno.
That (interchangeble) one-way tunnel is Munt Schera, north of Livigno. You would only have to take that one if you came via St. Moritz and Zernez.

Agree with Chevagi, Lecco, Sondrio, Bormio, Livigno. The route Milan to Bormio is an easy drive, lots of tunnels so you tend to be ok whatever the weather. Watch out for speed cameras on the long straight bits. The Bormio to Livigno drive is a bitvtrickier, narrower and more prone to weather but we've got over without problem with snow tyres even in white over conditions. The tunnel is the other way Livigno into Switzerland.
