Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Notaire fees added to mortgage?

Can notaire fees be paid from the mortgage, or must they be cash from savings?

@Philip1972, I think in both France and Switzerland we paid cash, although can't recall if we had to (I assume we did as it would have been somewhat logical to add to the loan) but I am really not sure.

A friend in a complex legal situation mentioned last week that he couldn't add legal costs or notaires to his mortgage requirement, but as I say, that wasn't just for a house purchase, so probably irrelevant.

@Philip1972 Where are you buying, and where is the mortgage coming from?

In our case in Switzerland, there was no way we'd get a 100% mortgage from a Swiss bank. We got all our initial funding by using equity in our UK property and extending the UK mortgage, effectively paying cash for everything in Switzerland.

Subsequently, we did take out a Swiss mortgage at leisure, but for the maximum 70% (if I recall) of the property value. This because at the time, Swiss mortgage rates and options were better than UK offerings. In retrospect, we saved a bit doing this, but with currency fluctuations and fees etc, it was barely worth it, although as a plus, as mortgagees we got a free Swiss bank account and debit cards.
