Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi guys! My first post here, and I believe my kind of strange topic (at least) will cause some attention. Case is that I'm off to ADH with my 14 year old son tomorrow. He's btw a park rat so we won't be together all the time. I was looking forward to bring my Preachers and enjoy both piste and off-piste. But the forecast tells me that we're into a week of spring conditions and maybe some icy pistes as well with last snowfall some days ago?
So... should I bring my Stöckli GS's (Not the FIS-edition) instead and just have a blast in piste? Have never been in ADH, so I really don't know how the conditions develop there right now.
Thanks!

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

How springy? If it gets soft enough to slush up, bearing in mind ADH is largely south facing then you might be ok on Preachers but they won't be a lot of fun on icy refrozem am groomers.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'd go with the Preachers, there's alot of bits to see there in between pisted parts. Up the top is much more scope to use them too.
Still "reasonably early" on season snow terms and it warms easily so shouldn't really be concerned about ice overall.
That's going to be busy too, don't know if you'll get the space to really enjoy a GS ski in next week's throughput as main pistes around town are pretty broad and indistinct. Just don't recall anywhere you will really be able to Let-em-loose terrain yes, how busy, no.
I just can't see you'd be stuck with the whitedots.

@ski3, A retail GS ski will have about the same sidecut radius as the Preachers.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

^^^This.
I'd probably take the Preachers even without the prospect of off-piste. Once the snow softens up in the afternoon they'll be far more fun.

You'll need to Register first of course.

@rjs, I just feel it's more the focus of someone using a GS type ski to want the space for pace to use them with the intention they bought them.
Accept that you can ride anything you want, but think there's definitely enough there in most conditions to really focus on the whitedot.
It's a fairly compact area piste wise in comparison to some other of the big French domain, which I felt quite busy skier number wise. And that was out of HT peak also.

The Preachers will be great fun as always, except when it’s icy at the start and end of the day when they won’t be fun

Thanks a lot! I guess I got the answers I was fishing for. In my mind, slush is the second best thing, so with no dump in sight, keep fingers crossed for a warm sun and no wind. Surfs up!

@ski3, I really don’t think you need that much space to enjoy a GS ski. I have 3 pairs of FIS GS and a pair of FIS SG and I really don’t feel so much that they aren’t fun.
It will be busy next week in fairness.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@under a new name, yes, fair enough regarding SG. It was busy on main pistes in March so HT could be more restrictive.
I think I'm giving it more of a bias from the terrain as I'd most equate it to GM in Chamonix. Quite alot of non pisted to venture around hence my bias to the whitedots.
When last we were there, 1st week March, it was quite melty around village but all the stuff up high around Pic Blanc stayed very nice without big melt and freeze. I'd envisage heading up there mostly for a Preacher owner.
Only place I've been that the coach on leaving had to use chains. It got stuck in the main street and kept going sideways pulling away uphill! It was chucking it down with snow and had to go down about 10 hairpin before removing them.
For the OP I think it's a good place to visit with quite alot to do generally. Also spectacular outdoor public pool in village centre.

Never used to former but rented a set of Stockli GS two weeks ago in Italy and they are my favorite on piste ski to date .... Fab for high speed on piste milage which was the aim in Italy (100k a day) but may not be so easy during mid term in ADH

You know it makes sense.

It's unlikely that you could rent anything like preachers in resort but I would expect a good choice of sl & gs skis
