Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Frustrated by boot flex

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Why do most of the lightest crossover AT boots with the best tech/features all come with a 130 flex?

I am not heavy and ski mainly trees/off piste and the last thing I need is a stiff boot, but I would like the lightest/best I can get.
For marketing reasons there seems a 'mine is bigger than yours' need for the flex to be the magic '130'.
This reminds me of the 'how long are your skis' competition in the 80s.

Most people will not suit/want/need that level of stiffness especially in uncertain, bumpy, varied conditions and yet, if you want the lightest, tech-iest boot you have to go for the 130 version. The 120/110 boot is invariably heavier and more basic.

I know there are slightly less stiff boots available but they are definitely in the minority.

I was chatting to a ski racer recently who told me that woman's slalom teams are now favoring less stiff boots as they are giving better results.

Will we ever get away from this ridiculous 130 obsession?

Have you tried Full Tilt boots? The Flexing is very different, and tongues are replaceable meaning you can switch between flex depending on your tastes.

@FoofyNoo, Almost all of the lighter AT boots actually have much softer flex than a full on piste equivalent. A 130 will ski more like a 110.

@FoofyNoo, Not my specialist subject but what an interesting question - my perception previously was that to get stiffer boots would require more or burlier materials but a quick peek on Tecnica touring boots and you are quite correct.

How odd.

Anyway, maybe go for a full touring boot e.g. Tecnica zero g Tour Scout at a nominal 120? A very keen touring chum is using them as his only boot this season for touring and alpine.

@FoofyNoo, Remember that there is no standard for those numbers...you'd have to try the boot on. Also it's worth remembering what "lightest" means compared to the possibly cheaper heavier model a bit down the range... maybe 200g... ie a museli bar... rolling eyes

@jellemr Thanks, but the Full Tilt is not that light and the cuff is too short.

@zikomo It is definitely true that the full AT 130 boots are not as stiff .... which does beg the question as to why they are labeled as '130'? Unfortunately, as I am really interested in a light 'one quiver' crossover boot that has interchangeable alpine/touring soles. The 130 issue is more prevalent within this range.

The equation seems to be ..

Lighter = More expensive and stiffer

I don't mind paying more for lightness ... but please ... no stiffer

Tecnica zero g Tour Scout ... great boot but I can't use them with the bindings on my piste skis. I really don't want to carry two sets of boots ... but thanks.

I would ask the same question but with regards to boot width and instep volume, the high end boots are generally low width and volume. I know you can punch for width, but there is not that much that can be done for depth. I need overlap boots as tongue boots don’t work for me. The last AT boot that worked for me was the Atomic Waymaker (which I still have), but there doesn’t seem to be a current boot with the same profile (120 flex dynafit compatible with high volume).

Thanks for this, a useful resource.

Yes, the Fulltilt Ascendants are nearly 2kg each ... I was looking for something closer to 1.5kg which is entirely possible in the 130 range.

I have Scarpa Freedom SLs which are nominally 120 but 115 according to the TGR list of justice.

They would fit the bill?

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
For years we did multi-day tours in FullTilts (then called Flexons) with rubber stuck on the soles:

Mrs A's were size 25.0 and weighed in at 1.67kg each. My 29.0's were 2.04kg.

I'll admit my current TLT5p's are only 1.26kg but they're much noodlier.

Also check out Roxa:

It is widely believed that they make FulTilts for K2 but have some own brand stuff too - many of which are Flexon derived.

@altis, I think roxa also make stuff for Scarpa - big similarities between roxa boots and the Scarpa F1 models.

These look very interesting but unfortunately would be too narrow for me ... also difficult to find in the UK ... but thanks.

One word - carbon!

FWIW I had a similar goal with boots this season. I've been completely convinced by the Full Tilt/Dalbello 3-piece style + Intuition Liners. Currently in the Dalbello Lupo 120 (with the Powerwrap Liner out of the dalbello Panterras I used last season) and it's far and away the best boot I've ever had. Obviously not the absolute lightest, but light enough, skins very well with the tongue out, and so smooth and absorbent while skiing. Also the first boot I've ever had that I don't have to unclip on every single lift.

Other boots I'm comparing that too:

- OG Technica Cochise
- Tecnica Cochise Pro Light
- Tecnica Cochise 130 DYN
- Scarpa Maestrale RS (the gen 2 version)
- Dalbello Panterra

Lange free tour boots. I got the 130 because they are green and go with my kit. I love them - feel bombproof but not too stiff.

The less stiff ones are lighter. But are orange.

@FoofyNoo,
Look at Dalbello Lupo - the softer boots are actually lighter and have pretty much identical functionality.

There is one frustration in that the narrower last version seems to only be available in stiffer flexes. but I've just seen you dont wear a narrow boot so the AX120 or AX110 would be ideal

good boots
