Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving to Cervinia

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello, perpetual lurker and occasional commenter (not sure that’s a word, but had a glass of vin!) here,
We’re off to Cervinia at Easter (first week of school hols, not Christian festival for the pedants out there) Laughing We normal drive to the likes of Tignes, Val Thorens or Les Arcs, but this time we’re branching out and driving to Italy! Any tips, or words of wisdom? Any advice gratefully received.

It's a spectacular drive, enjoy! Shame you can't pay the road and tunnel fees in advance before the pound tanks.
There is a non political Brexit thread giving practical advice to drivers and other European travellers post March 31st. It's very useful.

The normal wisdom: winter tyres. It isn't necessarily self-evident in Italy.

I haven't driven there myself, but took a taxi transfer there from Milan Malpensa. The taxi driver was clearly amused by the visiting cars stuck in the snow that we passed. He had some choice words regarding the cognitive abilities of the drivers.

Use a TransferWise Debit account and shunt Euro’s in when it’s good, provided some buffer.

"In the Val d'Aosta area, all vehicles must be fitted with winter tyres or snow chains between October 15th and April 15th." So not necessary for an Easter trip, but I would still reccomend taking snow chains

@johnE,
Still, winter tyres are much more convenient as one wouldn't need to fit anything on by the side of the road. On the other hand, if it's not a rented car and one does not own winter tyres from before, the investment might feel like overkill. And of course, it depends very much on the conditions.

@SkiingDad, Agreed, I was only pointing out that winter tyres are not required for Easter

We’ve driven to Cervinia twice, once in good conditions, second time with it snowing hard. Winter tyres for second trip ensured we made it up the mountain without too much grief. Good quality road up to Cervinia.
Be aware that you can queue quite a long time for Mont Blanc tunnel, and this can add to journey time. The only other comment to make is the additional journey time seems longer in reality than on paper, so schedule in plenty of proper breaks.
