After reading the thread on ski theft in 2 Alps I wonder what everyone else uses. I’ve never used locks but am thinking that perhaps I’ve been lucky so far and that luck could run out this time. So after trawling through the bewildering choice of reviews on Amazon, I’m none the wiser!

@bambionskiis, anything will do. Cable lock with combination, small enough to carry.

I got a chandler to make up a 750mm long wire rope with loops on each end. I think it was 2 or 3mm rope, which is very flexible. A small padlock completes the lock. Easy to carry in a pocket and long enough to fasten skis to something solid. It will not stop the determined thief, but keeps the honest people honest.

That's what I do too.
Probably not enough to deter a determined thief but sufficient to make them think twice or to prevent someone taking them by mistake (which I think is probably more likely than outright theft).

Just wondering how that works with skis dabber. Can you pass it through the bindings somehwere to secure it to the rack. I’ve only ever hired skiis so not really looked at bindings.
There will be 3 of us so if something could do all of us in one go that would be good.

@bambionskiis, you can normally feed the cable through the brakes. Realistically, any small cable lock will only protect you from opportunistic thieves (or idiots) since the cable will be easy to cut. So don't worry too much about finding the most secure way to route the cable.

Yep I've got the same sort of thing. It only needs to be enough to stop people accidently picking up your skis by mistake, or those that are looking for an easy steal. They'll quickly move on to easier opportunities. It also needs to be small and light, as you've got to carry it with you all day.

Agent ski lock - see here

Read the amazon reviews - work with fat skis and touring bindings
Have had these for a few seasons now and they are pretty bullet proof. Keys mean you can attach with gloves on / not fiddle about with combinations. . .packs down smaller than you think and if solo you don't need both loops if you just want to lock skis together . . .the other loop is handy as you can attach to a ski rack easily and /or another pair of skis . . .also useful for use as a short term bike lock . .

First of all if there’s three of you , best to split skis pairs and rack away from each other in odd pairs , the cable on the lock will fit though the binding somewhere then around the rack , sometime the rack hads a bolt that can be secured with the lock to stop skis being lifted out of rack
Any sort of deterant will work I reckon , but all of these methods combined be bomb proof

I use this and a really like it but it can be a faff if you're in a group and no one else worries, I'm usually the one people end up waiting for. So i tend to swap this around with a small dakine cable one if I know I'm likely to be somewhere I can see them and its not so important.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. I have passed them onto hubby for a final decision as he’s paying - and will probably be carrying!

Feck me that's the most overengineered thing I've seen. Given that a determined thief will just saw/cable snip what benefits does it give over a regular cable. Bling aside of course?

@Dave of the Marmottes, don’t diss the Safeman so easy, I don’t know what you mean by “gash”. it has a decent thickness of cable and slides up tight so also protects your poles which your 1.2m long fixed lemgth combi lock doesn’t. Do you also need a 1.2m cable in your pocket, I certainly don’t? At 17€ each I am perfectly happy with ours, use them all the time.

We have Dakine camlocks, the key ones, I'm not keen on combination locks, always have difficulty with them (probes user error). I like the one I use, feels sturdy enough, simple and not wildly expensive (<£15) dropped the key in about 4 foot of snow once that wasn't fun but, yay, found it I'm going to attach the key to my clothing for next trip...

I use a simple Dakine combination lock. Probably easily broken but to be bomb proof you'd need something heavier which brings it's own issues. I also split skis with those I ski with; we put them a reasonable distance apart. That combo should suffice.

Safeman isn't the same as LOqski is it? By gash I was referring to the wire Da Kine/ Burton type retractors. I've snapped the noggin off a couple of those. They work on the basis that its more deterrent than nothing but I pretty sure a determined tug can seriously damage them.

I wonder what the statistical likelihood of your skis being stolen is?
I have been skiing for 40+ years and have never met anyone who has had ski’s stolen.

and I've met a number of people who have had their (usually hire skis) as a minimum taken by mistake. I think this is really the bigger risk for most. Many people hiring skis will be lucky to remember the colour of those they are hiring so if you have anything vaguely pistey looking then....of course you can reduce that risk by having 2m long gargantuan freeride skis with tech bindings which even the most pissed punter will struggle to ski off on, but then you have something of conspicuous value to the specialist or envious tea leaf.

My girlfriend has walked off with the wrong skis (resulting in a cable car journey back to swap them for her own). They weren't even the same brand, just a similar colour! She owns these, so not hired.
Last year my mate had his brand new Cham 97s and carbon poles taken from outside an apres bar. Left at the end of the night were a pair of 'well used' identical skis, with £25 poles.
Another mistake (most likely), but all avoided with a simple lock.

eeyore had her skis "taken by accident" from the locked ski room inside our locked building 3 years ago. I saw them in the ski room this New Year and left a note on them so say if they could possibly be "my" skis could they please send me a text. no text, but they left them behind - karma There is nothing to lock skis to in our ski room so I got permission to fit eye bolts, which I did and only we use them so happy days

Guy I met on my last trip had someone take his hire skis by accident. He only found out when he took them back at the end of the week as they were the same hire companies skis but he was 40kg heavier than the other person so has wondered why his bindings gave so easily...
A lock or a swap would of prevented that mistake.

My mate had his new skis nicked by somebody getting off a two stage bubble ... left some crappy 160 skis behind. No lock is going to sort that out, though maybe keep an eye on what skis people help themselves to when they get out.

Agree that a lock is probably a good idea to protect new gear but how do you mark your equipment to personalise it? Paint, stickers, permanent marker or something else? I like the idea of a waterproof sticker but haven't found any yet. Just so it is more obvious which skis and boots are ours in the boot room. Any ideas?

Snowheads sticker on both my mountain boards.
plus I bought one of the agent ski locks. Just use it to connect the bindings together of mine and my wife's boards. Would be interesting seeing someone try to head off with 2 boards attached together
