Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski locks - recommendations please

We religiously swap skis at every stop and place on different racks.
It also prevents picking up the wring skis in error.

Being generous, as others have raised, someone accidentally walking off with your skiis is just as much a concern.

I can relate to this because in my early ski days, I was suddenly unable to ski in Austria and my skiis came off really quickly the couple of times I fell over. Hubby suggested going back to hire shop for advice and when I did I was met with a very frosty reception. I had accidentally taken a ski instructors skis - and apparently (unsurprisingly) she was fuming. It was the first day so I hadn’t taken any notice of what mine looked like. So embarrassing.

Sh*t! Just checked in my shiny new Vokl Mantra M5s at departures! Not a cheap ski and very desirable (unlike me) Read this post last week and planned to take my perfectly respectable bike lock. Will have to swap with mates in resort. Girl on PSB had hers nicked doing similar in Tignes though Shocked

As others have said little will deter a determined thief, but most of the locks listed could be cut with smallish (pocket sized) cutters because the cable is only 1 - 1.5mm.

This is 4.8mm steel with plastic coating (still thin enough to go through binding), so whilst not bullet proof a thief might need 12 - 18 inch bolt cutters to get through, and it would be a tad obvious walking around with them

Wow that looks good for people with precious skiis. Ours will only be rentals and we’ll probably get the insurance too to be on the safe side.

Someone tried to nick my hire skis in Borovets. I'd left them propped in the rack and locked to it, and when I came out of the restaurant they were on the ground still locked - with the poles taken. That little lock saved me a hefty charge from the hire shop, I'm sure.

I wonder what the statistical likelihood of your skis being stolen is?
I have been skiing for 40+ years and have never met anyone who has had ski’s stolen.

I understand that 3 pairs were nicked from one bar during the PSB this year.

Yes, I think most "ski accessory" locks could be cut with the edge of a ski, suitably applied. My cable's like the one you reference there, albeit differently branded. It's light but sufficiently thick.

It's partly the huge cost of my rather nice snowboards, but also trying to replace something which is not easily replaced.

Call me a tight Yorkshireman, but I made my own for £2 (didn't have time to order online)
Bought 2mm steel rope from hardware shop in York, created loops on either end - search YouTube for Flemish splice - really easy to do and quite satisfying. I finished mine off with insulation tape to cover sharp ends (a clamp would have been too big) - and a combination lock from home.
Worked perfectly last week with 2 pairs of skis, running through around the binding brake and locking them to the rack.
Gave us peace of mind whilst having a drink and light enough to carry in my pocket.
For version 2, think I will use 3 or 4mm PVC coated.
Hope it helps
