Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, my names Tom Bartlett, im a 3rd year Bsc Geography student at Portsmouth University, an avid snowboarder and im currently
writing a dissertation on the risk perception of mountain users towards avalanches. As part of this ive created a survey for
recreationists to complete to better understand the way we assess our risk when on the mountain and our risk
perception of avalanches as a hazard. Please if you have 10 minutes to spare can you fill out my survey, the more
data i collect the better my results will be (and the better my dissertation will be). Im really relying on the
snowsports community for data and appreciate every survey filled out. The link below takes you to the survey. Thanks!

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@TomBartlett, Very much focussed on off-pisters. I can't answer the questions as I would never ski the off pistes in your photos - not because of avalanche risk but because I am a piste only skier.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I think the survey is interesting and I've completed it but it makes the assumption that I am skiing off piste every day. In reality I don't. So my avalanche concern awareness level on early season piste days is nigh on zero. In spring it may be 10. I've put 6 as an average but it's not exactly scientific if you're trying to base a dissertation on it. Your survey doesn't account for these differences so I think you should clarify some of the questions/criteria.

Oh, and I also recognise the Tignes photo as a place where a load of people died the other year so of course it's a no for would I ski it. I'm sure lots of other people also know that slope so maybe you should put somewhere less well known if you're trying to assess "blind" risk assessment skills.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@TomBartlett, Hi Tom, you might want to revise this question:
Quote: |
What is the safest way to move across avalanche terrain when in a group?
Single file, closely spaced
Single file, wide spacing
Spread out, closely spaced
Spread out, wide spacing |
as I'm not sure how you can be spread out but also closely spaced. Also, you can be in single file but still spread out...
