Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A £200 ski weekend ... that transformed into a £7000 medical situation

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Four chancers go on a skiing weekend to St Moritz at £200 budget per person (really!). One has no travel insurance ... and he's the one who ends up in a clinic confronted by a £7000 quote for treatment.

But it's not all gloom and disaster.

This crack team of ski weekenders was from The Observer newspaper. Read their bizarre tale of road challenges, empty slopes and unlikely bargain hunting in the glitz of Moritz here.

Full marks for candour!

The writer has given a link to Hertz for car-hire - this is hardly a good option for anyone on a tight budget. If your not a member of some loyalty or corporate scheme, the Hertz website (and most of the car hire companies) is at least £100 more expensive than booking (the same car) through a broker like Holiday Autos or Carbookers Evil or Very Mad

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Well at least he states what should be obvious to fellow snowHeads, "Don't go skiing without insurance" Laughing

in the past 2 trips I've taken (Dec 2005 and Jan 2006) Hertz was cheaper than anyone else, using the offers available to all from their website. Their "standard" rate was not cheaper, but clicking thru' offers was considerably cheaper, especially when you count in the fact they include winter tyres and chains as standard.

David Goldsmith, that makes for a good read. What plonkers. Much less entertaining if they had slipped their snowchains on in a jiffy and spent a couple of quid on carte neige or whatever they have in Switzerland.

Hywel, I use Hertz frequently and only because I find them cheaper. It helps that I have a Gold Hertz card that lets me jump the queue though & gave us unlimited free extra drivers in the US last month...

One thing to watch though, if you use Geneva (CH) and book Hertz, don't use your BA Exec Club discount code. It makes the cars MORE expensive... Puzzled Puzzled Puzzled

David Murdoch,
But why have these "smoke and mirrors" discounts? I took gregh's advice and looked at the various 'click-through' discounts and the prices are cheaper (comparable with Holiday Autos) - but why not not have a WYSIWYG pricing structure?

Lorraine, exactly. The most I do now is send them up with a bin bag every now and again. Whatever I say and do makes no difference, so I may as well save my energy.

D G Orf, yeah although the words are tucked away at the end which could mean problems for those people who remain completely obvious unless trugeoned over the head.

"Misers' tips: Don't even dream of going skiing without travel insurance."

No. Really?

Even if to prove a glaringly obvious point about needing insurance, I must admit it was a nice story about ski hols not having to cost lots. Laughing
