must also be considered that any response time by the local Pompiers to effect rescues will have been extended due to the geographic location of Courcheval. Very sad.

Poor woman. I don’t know why they just didn’t get the ladder near her, it’s right there in the video.
If it was arson, as has been alleged, then I hope they find who did it.

I’d be surprised if there were enough appliances within Courchevel to deal with that fire. I suspect that they had to pull in support from Moutiers.

all rather depressing.
for those who wonder "why can that happen", despite being in the EU the fire regs can vary .. i remember arguing with the local execs of a US company in france, during an audit, as to why there were no smoke detectors, sprinklers or extinguishers in the office. was told "its not open to the public, so we don't need to comply". wrote them up and made then fix it... never got an answer as to why they thought staff didn't count...
condolences to all involved.

Did the firefighters get their training from a Fireman Sam cartoon...
Placing the big ladder as far away as possible from the person engulfed in flames.
The jumper needs to get lawyered up and win some cash.
Looks like arson by gasoline and murder.
Somebody is headed to "le jail" for 20 years.

@Alastair Pink, yes - it was discussed on the Les Arcs thread, which is where I found out about the fire in the building complex I'm in! 400 people were evacuated from the other half of this building in the early hours, due to the smoke emanating from a Poubelle room. This fire was actually pretty minor (and confined to the one room) but I think the other fires may have caused more damage. I've not heard any further reports.

The building wasn't compliant with EU regs and was a death trap waiting to happen: no smoke detectors, no fire extinguishers and no emergency exits.
The police investigation is ongoing. A local dealer has been arrested for starting the fires but the victims say the real criminals are the building's owners (https://www.maisontournier.com/en/ - if you are looking for who to avoid) and the authorities.
Like many of the 25 victims, Ambre Corci still has physical and psychological problems but she is walking again.

The firebrigade in the Belleville valley have invested in two rescue airbags so people can jump out of windows if there is a fire without breaking their backs. Good news. Hopefully Courchevel / St Bon will do the same.

Six years and still waiting for justice
https://www.francebleu.fr/infos/faits-divers-justice/incendie-mortel-a-courchevel-six-ans-apres-je-ne-vais-toujours-pas-bien-confie-ambre-corci-l-une-des-rescapees-1652105
"At the trial of the man accused of setting fire to a residence for seasonal workers in Courchevel in January 2019, several victims and their relatives were heard by the assize court on Thursday. This was the case for Ambre Corci, who had to jump from the third floor to escape the flames.
She took the stand with her head held high, carrying her water bottle and a packet of tissues. On the fourth day of the trial of the man accused of starting the fatal fire in a seasonal workers' residence on January 20, 2019, Ambre Corci spoke for the first time before the Savoie assize court in Chambéry, while several civil parties were heard during the morning. The young woman, now 31, is one of the survivors of the fire. “I was staying at Isba for the second year running”, confides the Gardoise, who lives in Monteils. “I was working at the Saint Roch and that night I was asleep. I was woken up by the shouting and by people banging on my door.” She pauses. “I opened the door and...” Another pause, and the first tears. But she continues her account of that night of horror.
“I ended up defenestrating myself.”
“It was impossible to get out, there was smoke everywhere. I put on my après-ski, my jacket and grabbed my phone before heading for the window. It was unbearable in the bedroom and soon it was the same on the window. I could hardly breathe.” She explains that her room is on the third floor, overlooking the impasse des Verdons. “There were people downstairs, and they told me to wait, that the firemen were coming. I waited as long as I could, an interminable wait ... but I ended up defenestrating myself.” Ambre Corci goes on to describe her fall to the concrete and her first memories of being on the ground, with people talking to her. She was then taken by helicopter to the hospital in Chambéry, then to the CHU in Grenoble.
“I have several fractures in my vertebrae, some pieces of which have lodged in my spinal cord,” continues the thirty-year-old. “The doctors told me I'd never walk again. The fumes had also burned my lungs and larynx, and I spent several days in intensive care.” Still standing before this Assize Court, six years on, she looks back on her convalescence and months of rehabilitation near Montpellier. “That's for the physical side... and then after that there's the psychological side.”
“We want to try and turn the page”
“Six years on, I'm still not well,” says the former season girl, confiding that she had a major breakdown. “I don't think I've mourned the loss of my former life. Even if I walk again and I'm alive, it's still very complicated. I'm trying to tell myself that I'm cured, but that accident still follows me today.” The president of the assize court then asks her if she still has pain following her fall. I've learned to live with it,” she says, ”but I soon feel pain when I exert myself. My sport was horse-riding ... and no,” confides Ambre, sobs in her voice. She explains that she has nothing to say about the origin of the fire, that she saw nothing in particular. “We've been waiting six years for this as victims. I'm there, but some of us aren't. We want answers. We want answers, we want to try and turn the page,” confides the Gardoise. “I'd really like to see the accused come to his senses.
“Psychologically, she's destroyed”.
Her sister, Aurore, and her mother, Isabelle, then spoke before the court. “I'm a collateral victim,” confides her sister, ”Behind it all, it's families that have been impacted, even shattered, I'd like to say. My parents split up, and it was financially complicated because we had to interrupt our business.” As for Ambre's mother, she recalls the phone call from the manager of the hotel where her daughter worked, her blackout, the drive to the hospital in Grenoble. “We were able to see our daughter, she was black, she couldn't speak, and then she was operated on for six hours,” explains Isabelle Corci. ”She showed remarkable courage. She told me: 'Don't worry, Mum, I'll walk again'”. On the stand, she also said she had been waiting for this trial for six years. “For the past year and a half, I've been able to talk about it without feeling guilty, guilty of not having protected my daughter, when that's our role as parents. I see my daughter not doing well, psychologically, she's destroyed,” adds the mother. “I hope there will be a before and an after to this trial, I hope it will result in something that will enable us to repair ourselves,” concludes Isabelle Corci."
