Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria Ski Weekend

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I am in the process of organising a Thursday - Sunday weekend.

I was originally thinking of flying into Geneva and then skiing in the PDS or Chamonix for simplicity.

But we have probably done this to death so want to consider Austria instead as flights to Innsbruck are reasonable.

Are there any resorts within 1/2 hour transfer that would have enough pistes to cover a lot of distance and enough apres to keep six 25 year olds entertained?

Thanks

@DavThomas, if you fancy Austria, also consider Salzburg airport. There are a lot of places you can get to within 45 mins straight down the motorway. We have a guesthouse in Radstadt, neighbouring mountains include Flachau, Zauchensee, Reiteralm, Schladming and Obertauern. What weekend are you looking at? Ange

If you widen your transfer to an hour, as 1/2 hr barely gets you beyond passport control, then Skiwelt area comes into play from Innsbruck (Kitzbuhel is only a little further) as does ski Amade from Salz as noted above, and Zell am See and Saalbach Ski circus from Salz. All much better than skiing France, and all with loads of snow now, following recent and ongoing epic snowfall in Austria.

Also consider a train to Munich airport and late flight back for the return on Sunday, can extend your final day for not much extra transfer time. Depending on resort it’s only 1.5 to 2 hours from Skiwelt, Worgl and Kufstein are the main connection points to pick up Munich train.

@DavThomas, half an hour transfer is being optimistic even with Geneva.

The Ski Amade villages are very near to Salzburg airport perhaps 45 minutes. Saalbach - Hinterglemm not much further.

For Innsbruck there is lots nearby, if you go by road direct from the airport then within an hour you should be able to get to St Anton, Ischgl, Serfaus, Sölden, Zillertal plus a whole host of smaller places. If you prefer public transport both St Anton and the Zillertal are easily accessible by train (though this takes a bit longer). Personally I would suggest St Anton, the apres is legendary (look up Mooserwirt or Krazy Kangeroo on youtube) and the skiing even more so, it really depends on your skiing abilities and how much partying you want to do.

Innsbruck itself works well for a short ski trip. There are several areas served from the city on public transport. In fact you don't need to leave the city to ski! It's a different mindset to being "in resort" but we certainly enjoyed our trip and would do it again anytime.

extend your 30mins to 100 mins, otherwise you are looking at Seefeld, or one of the Innsbruck resorts like Schlick.
Instead you can look at St Anton, Myahofren, Kitzbuhel, etc.

Public Transport is good in Austria. Easy to find train times/prices & buses to plan

Nope.

If you visit a few of the local resorts (all on one lift pass) and party in the city then yes. But none of the local resorts are good for miles of piste cruising and heavy apres.

In an hour's transfer you can be in St Anton in the west or Kitzbühel/etc in the east though.

Should have been more clear!

I meant 1 to 2 hour transfer not 1/2 hour!

@DavThomas, Then you have a great variety of possibilities, what sort of skiers are you and how important is the apres?

Currently in St Anton. Landed at Innsbruck at 10.20 and arrived at main train station at 1pm - all with public transport. You can stow luggage in lockers at the station and cross the road to hire skis.

If you got a taxi/ private transfer, according to the seasoned St Anton skiers we sat with on the plane, you could be on the slopes within 2 hrs all checked in if your hotel is close to the lift.
