My brother needs to take 2 pairs of skis from the UK to Norway (one-way). He's flying Norwegian air. The skis are currently securely packed in a cardboard box. Can he check them in the box, or does he need to unpack them and buy a ski bag for them? He'll be skiing locally in Norway out of his car, so he doesn't really need a ski bag for any other reason.
Has anyone got any experience of doing this, particularly on Norwegian Air but also on other airlines?

I've no experience of NA - but can't imagine any airline objecting to carrying a cardboard box, regardless of its contents.

Just dont expect them to replace the box if it gets a bit damaged whilst in their care.

The only way this will work is if the recipient has a commercial importation EORI number otherwise, as Norway is not in the EU, the recipient will be charged VAT by the shipper on behalf of the Norwegian authorities at their 25% rate.

Should be fine but I think the only question is whether it would count as standard checked baggage, or ski carriage?
Standard checked bags are included in lowfare+ and flex fares. Each bag must not exceed 250 x 79 x 112 cm (L x H x W) with max. circumference 300 cm.

Thanks all. I assumed it would be fine but he is a bit stressed about getting to the airport and being told he can't take them without them being in a ski bag, so I was looking for some reassurance for him.
Apart from the customs issues posting them is far too expensive (more than the skis are worth).
It hadn't occurred to me that they might be ordinary luggage, but the skis are about 170cm long so they'll be over the max circumference dimensions.

I once tried to check in a box of clothing and was hassled: "we carry suitcases, not boxes". I did eventually got them to take it. So be forewarned.

Skis are classified as "sports equipment" (most airline, not sure about Norwegian Air though). So if you can find a ski bag, it may work out to be cheaper even with paying the cost of the bag...

Take it rolled up in his hand luggage. If needs it, unpack the skis and put the skis and some packaging in the ski bag.

@abc, yes, the plan is to check them as skis. I just wanted some reassurance they would be ok in a cardboard box rather than a ski bag as he doesn't have one. Actually, you have just reminded me that I once checked a cardboard box of clothes too! I don't recall any issues with it though.

@Gämsbock, The really important point, is it a really strong cardboard box made to transport skis? They can so easily get damaged. But I can't see the airlines having a problem — I see all sorts of boxes etc., on the baggage carousel.

@Poogle, it’s a proper ski box. The skis aren’t new so superficial damage isn’t a concern.
@LOTA, just to avoid buying (and then eventually disposing of) something he otherwise doesn’t need or want.

I've done this a couple of times - once for a point-to-point ski tour and the other as I didnt have a bag to hand.
No problems at all.
Some ski carriage conditions have a maximum size but a ski cardboard box would be hard to exheed.
I've also done this plenty of times with a bike on point-to-point tours.
