Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Another deadly avalanche in Valais, this time in the Nendaz area.

It’s a beautiful sunny day today here in Kitzbühel and by 10 o’clock I saw 2 boarders with no gear (no backpack on either of them so unless they’ve got the shovel and probe down their trousers they haven’t got it) boarding through avalanche barriers and where the gazex pipes are when the avalanche risk is 4.

So there will likely be more accidents now the weather has brightened up.
There are still signs everywhere saying keep to the pistes

People are utter bellends. Thing is most people who have put themselves in risky situations will get away with it, they then become "experienced" and repeat becuase "experience" tells them they are good at making decisions. I recognise I'm prone to the same fallacy.

@Dave of the Marmottes, well this is it. Until something goes wrong and they learn from the mistake (if they live to learn from the mistake) then nothing much will change will it?

Come on, boarding through avalanche barriers and where the gazex pipes are is safe even in avi risk 3 (I guess close to 4 is 3?) Such areas are controlled by Gazex and the barriers are only in situ to protect features below such as people, pistes and buildings. Its no surprise that boarding is a dying art - most have been killed - it really does beggar belief what some fouls do and clearly in this case endangering others!

Gasex is a weird one. It tells us some things which may or may not be helpful.

One thing it tells us is that the slope is susceptible to slides. It might imply that the slope is frequently controlled but it doesn't guarantee it. & it might inidcate that just below the surface is a whole load of concrete choss from previous slides.

On the carrying gear point. I generally will assume that anyone not carrying gear is not invested enough in the sport to have done so and hence is highly unlikely to be up to speed on avy theory and best practices and safe travel protocols. slight exceptions may be old old locals who plainly know every inch of the mountain and daily change in conditions but even then I don't trust them.

Watched the well educated dudes dropping down the east face of Tschuggen (faces to Grindelwald ) on Tues. morning we were only on level 4....... fortunately nothing happened.
Yesterday up at Saanersloch I viewed a huge slide which you would not have wanted a ride in. The area had been vigorously skied and again level 4 the previous day. We shouldn't be too surprised when folk get hurt or worse.........!

When I spotted a good friend holidaying in Tignes, via fb I felt obligated to send her a word of caution regarding avy conditions during this week.
Henry has already put something out for EK and todays SLF has level 4 against the French boarder.
Our Wengen correspondent is reporting a significant avalanche just up from the village earlier on today.
Level 3 is Serious, particularly when it could be heading to lvl4!!!!!!! Take care.........

There was an avalanche between Les 2 Alpes and St Christophe.
Two dead and two survived. Sad news.

Translated from https://www.ledauphine.com/isere-sud/2019/01/29/les-deux-alpes-les-secours-mobilises-sur-une-avalanche

5:58 pm: The second victim who had been admitted to the CHU in critical condition died shortly after admission, learns Dauphine Libere.

This is Damien Albert, an independent ski instructor living in Les Deux Alpes, described as a very experienced professional and off-piste specialist.

The 55-year-old man found dead in the casting in the early afternoon is from the Toulouse region.

According to the first elements of the investigation, it was a client of Damien Albert. The group consisted of four skiers, two of whom were not washed away and gave the warning.

Like the experienced Instructor who got himself and his two clients killed 20+ years ago below Avoriaz on a pitch that "everyone knows" slides at the drop of a feather?

Two of the Courmayeur victims were London based, experienced backcountry skiers.

Interesting and dangerous day tomorrow around the Tarentaise - The senior forecaster at Bourg is saying the conditions are highly unusual and large avalanches forecast due to temperature increase. Risk 4 and unusual, think I'll be on piste tomorrow.
